It has been confirmed that organophosphorus compounds OP altered glucose homeostasis. Considerable experimental and clinical evidences have contributed the beneficial effects of antioxidant compounds in plant extract on hepatorenal toxicity. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether Melissa officinalis extract, was able to ameliorative hepatorenal injury induced by organophosphorus Malathion. Malathion at 27mg/kg bw was administered to rats alone or in combination with Melissa officinalis extract at 200mg/kg bw. Malathion decreases feed intake and body weight as well as liver and kidneys weight. Moreover, Malathion increases the levels of various serum marker enzymes AST, ALT and ALP. A significant increase in the level of serum urea, uric acid and creatinine in response to ML treatment. As well as ML induced increase in MDA in liver and kidneys while induced decreases in the activities of SOD, GPx and CAT. Co-administration of malathion with Melissa officinalis extract resulted in restoration of all tested parameter. These results may be due to the significant increase recorded in acetylcholine esterase (Ach E) activity invivo after co administration of malathion and Melissa officinalis extract. In histological study of liver and kidney, Malathion induced damage in liver and kidneys. However, MO administration to ML-treated animals resulted in overall improvement in liver and kidneys damage, emphasizing its antioxidant role. In light of the available data, it can deduce that ML-induced lipid peroxidation, oxidative stress, liver and kidneys damage rats, and conjoint supplementation of MO has resulted in pronounced ameliorating effect in all tested parameter and histological picture of liver and kidney. Combined protective effect of vitamins C and E on cadmium induced oxidative liver injury in rats

Our study pertains to the potential ability of vitamin C and/or vitamin E, used as nutritional supplements, to alleviate oxidative stress induced by cadmium. Male rats were randomly divided into five groups of eight each. Group I served as the controls; group II received in their drinking water CdCl 2 (200 mg/L); group III received both CdCl 2 and vitamin C (1.5 g/L of water); group IV was treated with CdCl 2 and vitamin E (400 mg/kg diet); and group V received CdCl 2 + vitamin C + vitamin E. The exposure of rats to cadmium chloride for 30 days resulted in a significant decrease in body weight gain. Cadmium treatment also produced oxidative liver injury characterized by increasing serum glucose concentration, glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GPT), alanine aminotransaminase (GOT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities. Meanwhile cadmium supplementation decreased serum total protein and albumin in animals. In addition, liver glutathione level, catalase and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities were diminished. With vitamin C and vitamin E administration during intoxication of cadmium, corrective effects on Cd-induced oxidative stress in the liver was observed. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that oral exposure to Cd caused reduction in LPO and antioxidant enzyme activities in rat's liver, and vitamin C or vitamin E may have partial ameliorative effects on these disturbances, whereas vitamin C and vitamin E together assured a more efficient protection of the organ against the noticed oxidative stress.

Protection from effects of the organophosphate insecticide, malathion on the liver and kidney of male Wistar albino rats by -tocopherol and selenium was investigated. Significantly greater (P<0.01) mean concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) and lesser concentrations (P<0.01) of reduced glutathione (GSH) and tissues total proteins were observed in liver and kidney of rats exposed to malathion. Activities of the antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were less in livers and kidneys of rats exposed to malathion. These effects caused by exposure to malathion were reversed when rats were subsequently treated orally with 100 mg/kg b.w. tocopherol and/or 0.1 mg selenium/kg b.w. Both tocopherol and selenium (Se) reduced the concentration of MDA, and increased concentration of total proteins and reduced glutathione and mean activities of SOD, CAT and GPx, to levels that were not significantly different from unexposed, control rats, previous to exposure to malathion. Selenium was significantly (P<0.05) more effective at recovering activities of SOD and GPx in liver and kidney of malathion treated rats than wastocopherol, whereas, -tocopherol was significantly (P<0.05) more effective at recovering activities of CAT in liver and kidney than was Se. Both -tocopherol and Se were effective in alleviating oxidative damage in liver and kidney of rats caused by malathion.
