Effect of Tualang honey on the anastomotic wound healing in large bowel anastomosis in rats-A randomized controlled trial

Abstract: BackgroundHoney has long been used for the treatment of number of ailments and diseases including surgical wounds. Current study evaluates the effectiveness of Tualang honey (TH) for large bowel anastomotic healing in Wistar rats.MethodsThirty male Wistar rats were given a 3 centimeter infra-umbilical laparotomy wound, in`flicted on their abdomen. The colonic transection was performed at 5 cm distal to caecum, with end to end anastomosis of colon segment. They were divided into two groups. Group I was fed with… Show more

“…A study by Sukur et al (2011) showed that topical application of Tualang honey on burn wounds contaminated with P. aeruginosa and A. baumannii provided a faster healing rate than chitosan gel or hydrofibre silver treatment [ 124 ]. Meanwhile, another study showed that the oral treatment of Tualang honey enhanced anastomotic wound healing in large bowel anastomosis in rats by increasing the number of fibroblasts and decreasing inflammatory cells, leading to increased wound strength [ 125 ]. A clinical trial looking into Tualang honey’s effect on promoting the post-tonsillectomy healing process has been conducted by comparing sultamicillin-treated group and sultamicillin + Tualang honey-treated group.…”

“…Bowel anastomosis is a common abdominal operation, and the incidence of anastomosis leakage has been reported in different studies between 2.6% to 30% depending on the type of procedure, surgical technique and patient demographics [8], [9], [10], [11]. Anastomosis leakage leads to increase hospitalisation, morbidity and mortality ranging from 6.2% to 37% [12], [13].…”

“…Honey possesses many beneficial properties such as neuroprotective, anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, wound healing, anticancer etc. [5,6,13,14]. Based on the current literature search, there has been very little research on the effect of honey on learning and memory on chronic cerebral hypoperfusion induced neurodegeneration in animal models.…”
