Effect of Rearing Density of ”Dumbo” Catfish (Clarias sp.) Fry on Production in the Controlled Nitrogen Culture System by Adding Wheat Powder

Abstract: Demand of "dumbo" catfish is going to increase every year so that fry production should be increased in order to support intensification culture system to meet market demand. Intensification in fish culture system may cause decreasing of dissolved oxygen content and producing high level waste in the pond culture. The effort to control inorganic nitrogen in intensive culture system can be performed by adding wheat powder into fish culture media. This can support metabolic process of nitrogen by microbe and then… Show more

“…According to Fujaya (2004), the rate of metabolism is affected by biotic factors such as temperature, salinity, oxygen, carbon dioxide, ammonia, pH, photoperiodism, season, and pressure; and abiotic factors like activity, weight, sex, age, schooling, stress, fasting, and feeding ratio. It is in line with Shafrudin et al (2006) that metabolism has a big portion in using energy compared to growth, for instance: energy for activity and swimming. Treatment one, two, and three obtained lower energy retention than treatment four.…”

“…An intensive rearing using high stocking density was conducted to achieve maximum daily production. When the optimum production hasn't been achieved, stocking density addition would possible, even though the fish growth tend to decrease (Shafrudin et al, 2006). In this study, survival rate and growth of each treatment were classified as high.…”
