“…10,11 In addition, comparative studies between isotonic and hypotonic artificial tears have indicated that hypotonic solutions are more effective in improving the subjective symptoms, ocular surface staining, and some tear film parameters. 12,13 However, previous studies on hypotonic artificial tears only evaluated the changes of clinical symptoms and signs and did not investigate the parameters associated with ocular surface inflammation.…”

“…Sodium hyaluronate (SH) is capable of holding large quantities of water, and ophthalmic solutions containing SH are the currently preferred tear-film substitute [21][22][23][24][25][26]. Formulations containing SH are commercially available in Japan in single-dose containers without preservatives, and in multidose containers with preservatives.…”

“…While some studies have indicated that hypotonic solutions are superior regarding the improvement of symptoms and patient compliance, others failed to find significant differences between isotonic and hypotonic solutions (PAPA et al, 2001;ARAGONA et al, 2002;TROIANO & MONACO, 2008). The main disadvantage of these drops is the limited ocular action (BAUDOUIN et al, 2013).…”
