Ammonia-oxidizing microorganism communities are abundant and functionally efficacious in nitrification. However, ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) groups complicate this process in subtropical streams. This study investigates the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing communities south of the Dabie Mountains, China, using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Clone libraries were utilized to analyze the abundance and microbial structures of AOA and AOB in sediments. Such analysis may provide strong evidence reflecting the links within the environment. The results show that AOB had a lower abundance of copies of the ammonia-oxidizing gene (amoA) than AOA. Interestingly, the AOA and AOB community compositions were correlated with ecological characteristics. The dissolved oxygen (DO) and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) had significant positive correlations, whereas the phosphorus within the structure had a negative correlation with the abundance of both groups. Our study shows that it might adopt some species related to Nitrosotalea clusters that can resist comparably higher pH (toward pH 6.5). Together, these results imply that the physiological adaptation of microbial guilds to environmental pressures in ammonia-oxidizing archaea might allow them to have a more substantial function of ammonia-oxidizing communities in natural habitats.

The efficiency of removing chemical oxygen demand (COD) and turbidity from wood wastewater was investigated using a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and the photo‐Fenton process. A total of 94.78% of COD reduction and 99.9% of turbidity removal were observed under optimum conditions of SBR, which consisted of an organic loading rate (OLR) of 0.453 kg COD m−3 day−1, mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) of 4564 mg L−1, and cycle time of 48 h. A magnetic α‐Fe2O3@TiO2@SO3H nanocatalyst was prepared as a heterogeneous Fenton reagent. The Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy‐dispersive X‐ray (EDX), and elemental mapping (MAP) analyses were performed to determine the structure and morphology of synthesized photocatalyst. The response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the process based on a central composite design (CCD). The maximum photocatalytic degradation of 87.54% and COD reduction of 83.35% were achieved at a dosage of 0.6 g L−1 of catalyst, 30 mg L−1 of H2O2, and pH of 3.5 for 45 min. The results indicated that a combination of the SBR process and α‐Fe2O3@TiO2@SO3H could be used as an effective method for the treatment of wood wastewater. Practitioner Points A combination of the SBR and photo‐Fenton process was introduced as an impressive method for wood industry wastewater treatment. The efficiencies of COD, BOD5, NO3‐N, PO4‐P, and color removal were obtained according to the standard limits in Iran. To our knowledge, this study is the first report of the use of synthesized α‐Fe2O3@TiO2@SO3H photocatalyst for the wood industry wastewater treatment.

BACKGROUND Reverse osmosis (RO) is becoming the predominant technology for the future of desalinated of seawater. Nonetheless, operational challenges such as membrane biofouling in RO desalination plants result in membrane deterioration and high energy costs. In this regard, pre‐treatment technologies, such as microfiltration (MF) membranes, are proven to reduce the impact of membrane biofouling in RO systems. Hence, surface modifications of commercial cellulose MF membranes with graphene oxide nanosheets (GONSs) at different concentrations were carried out in this research study. The new membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy amongst other methods of analysis. A continuous cross‐flow MF system was used to investigate the performance of the new cellulose/GONS membranes with regards to total bacteria count (TBC) removal, water flux, and biofouling resistance. RESULTS TBC removal efficiency of 93.6 ± 2.4% and 27.4 ± 12.5% was achieved using the new cellulose/GONS membranes and control pristine cellulose membranes, respectively. This higher removal efficiency was achieved at a water flux of 334.7 ± 10.4 L/(m2 h). Furthermore, a dramatic 55% increase in the transmembrane pressure (TMP) of the pristine cellulose membrane was observed after 24 h operation compared to only a 6% increase in the newly fabricated cellulose/GONS membranes, reflecting their strong anti‐fouling properties. CONCLUSION Surface modification of MF membranes with anti‐fouling nanomaterials such as GONS has the potential to be implemented in the pretreatment of seawater to improve the RO performance and lower the energy consumption. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry
