Effect of 1-piece and 3-piece AcrySof intraocular lenses on the development of posterior capsule opacification after cataract surgery

Abstract: There was no evidence of a difference in the area of PCO after cataract surgery between 1-piece and 3-piece IOLs, which were otherwise matched for material and lens geometry.

“…15 In general, clinical studies comparing PCO prevention between these IOLs and their 3-piece counterparts have not shown statistically significant differences. [16][17][18][19] Sacu et al 16 found that although eyes with 1-piece IOLs had slightly more PCO than eyes with 3-piece IOLs 1 year after implantation (PZ.002), the difference was no longer present after 2 years (PZ.3). In a study by Leydolt et al 17 1-piece and 3-piece hydrophobic acrylic IOLs had no significant difference in PCO intensity or neodymium: YAG laser treatment rate at the 5-year follow-up.…”

“…With the introduction of the single-piece hydrophobic acrylic IOL design, the effect of this modification on PCO development has become a subject of debate in literature. [20][21][22][23] According to the Evaluation of Posterior Capsule Opacification convention, only eyes with intact posterior capsules should be included in the assessment. However, a few authors 24 have pointed out that such an inclusion may present a bias towards the outcome.…”

“…[10][11][12][13][14][15][16]19,20 The 3-piece AcrySof (MA series) was associated with haptic kinking or compression, 21 and a 1-piece AcrySof (SA series) became available. The results of 1-piece AcrySof IOLs are encouraging in adult cataract surgery, [30][31][32][33] leading to its extended application in pediatric cataract surgery. The 1-piece AcrySof IOL is compatible with a small incision and the injector system.…”
