In this work, a pollution-sensitive Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF) based on Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) technology is designed and implemented for sensing refractive indices and concentrations of polluted water . The overall construction of the sensor is achieved by splicing short lengths of PCF (ESM-12) solid core on one side with traditional multimode fiber (MMF) and depositing a gold nanofilm of 50nm thickness on the end of the PCF sensor. The PCF- SPR experiment was carried out with various samples of polluted water including(distilled water, draining water, dirty pond water, chemical water, salty water and oiled water). The location of the resonant wavelength peaks is seen to move to longer wavelengths (red shift) as the refractive index increases due to the transfer of maximum energy from the reflected power of the light guided through the fiber to the surface plasmons. The experimental results show that the highest sensitivity reached 4202.6nm/RIU for oiled water, the signal to noise ratio was 0.625, the resolution was 2.4*10-5 RIU, and the figure of merit was 22.8. The prepared sensor exhibited excellent performance features, making it an excellent element for detecting water pollutants.

The ease of controlling waveguide properties through unparalleled design flexibility has made the photonic crystal fiber (PCF) an attractive platform for plasmonic structures. In this work, a dual analyte channel's highly sensitive PCF bio-sensor is proposed based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR). In the proposed design, surface plasmons (SPs) are excited in the inner flat portion of two rectangular analyte channels where gold (Au) strip is deposited. Thus, the surface roughness that might be generated during metal deposition on circular surface could be effectively reduced. Considering the refractive index (RI) change in the analyte channels, the proposed sensor is designed and fully characterized by the finite element method based COMSOL Multiphysics software. Improved sensing characteristics including wavelength sensitivity (WS) of 186,000 nm/RIU and amplitude sensitivity (AS) of 2,792.97 RIU −1 in the wide RI range of 1.30 to 1.43 is obtained. In addition, the proposed sensor exhibits excellent resolution of 5.38 × 10 −7 , signal to noise ration (SNR) of 13.44 dB, figure of merits (FOM) of 2188.23, detection limit (DL) of 101.05 nm, and detection accuracy (DA) of 0.0204 nm −1 . In this paper, a photonic crystal fiber sensor is proposed which have four-opening channels that support surface plasmon resonances. By detecting the optical spectrum of leakage from the fiber core to the four regions created on its periphery, the sensitivity of the sensor can be assessed. Gold is used as the plasmonic material in the infrared wavelength range on the Titanium oxide film which is used as a substrate layer to increase the coupling and adhesion. Influences of structural parameters on the sensor performance are investigated by the Finite Difference Element method. Sensitivities for refractive index of 1.34-1.44 for wavelength ranges (690-1500 nm) with maximum wavelength sensitivity of 25,600 nm / RIU and maximum amplitude sensitivity and 7367 ( RIU −1 ) and figure of merit (FOM) of 547 ( RIU −1 ) have been calculated. In addition to high sensitivity, great FOM value of this sensor is an important feature. This sensor can be used to identify chemicals and biomolecules.
