Drug delivery system based on cyclodextrin-naproxen inclusion complex incorporated in electrospun polycaprolactone nanofibers

Abstract: In this study, we select naproxen (NAP) as a reference drug and electrospun poly (ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) nanofibers as a fibrous matrix for our drug-delivery system. NAP was complexed with beta-cyclodextrin (βCD) to form inclusion complex (NAP-βCD-IC) and then NAP-βCD-IC was incorporated into PCL nanofibers via electrospinning. The incorporation of NAP without CD-IC into electrospun PCL was also carried out for a comparative study. Our aim is to analyze the release profiles of NAP from PCL/NAP and PCL/NAP-βCD-I… Show more

“…PCL has previously been reported as a main building block of different PCLbased formulations, e.g., micro and nanospheres (Sinha et al, 2004), films, micelles, scaffolds, and fibers (Dash and Konkimalla, 2012;Woodruff and Hutmacher, 2010). It has also been successfully electrospun in previous studies (Canbolat et al, 2014;Fujihara et al, 2005;Karuppuswamy et al, 2015;Kenawy et al, 2009;Kim et al, 2012;Kouhi et al, 2013;Li et al, 2005;LuongVan et al, 2006;Madhaiyan et al, 2013;Reneker et al, 2002;Seif et al, 2015;Shin et al, 2004;Srikar et al, 2007;Valarezo et al, 2013;Vrbata et al, 2013;Yoshimoto et al, 2003;Zamani et al, 2010).…”

“…Incorporation of QU/b-CD-IC into electrospun nanofibres could be a valuable approach to use QU in a more efficient way, because of the high surface area-tovolume ratio and highly porous structure of nanofibres. Related studies on CD-IC incorporated electrospun nanofibres for different purposes have already been reported by our group (Aytac, Dogan, Tekinay, & Uyar, 2014;Aytac, Sen, Durgun, & Uyar, 2015;Canbolat, Celebioglu, & Uyar, 2014;Celebioglu, Umu, Tekinay, & Uyar, 2014;Kayaci, Ertas, & Uyar, 2013;Kayaci, Sen, Durgun, & Uyar, 2014;Kayaci, Umu, Tekinay, & Uyar, 2013;Kayaci & Uyar, 2012). CDs were also used for crosslinking of polymeric materials (Li & Hsieh, 2005;Liu, Zhang, Liu, Ni, & Li, 2013).…”

“…A higher amount of curcumin/β-CD addition increased the dissolution rate of the curcumin from PVA-based composite fibres (Sun et al, 2013). The dissolution rate of the drug was doubled compared with that of naproxen/PCL nanofibres (Canbolat et al, 2014) with the addition of a naproxen-β-CD inclusion complex to PCL nanofibres. Similarly, the drug release rate was found to improve with an increasing CD/spironolactone ratio upon the addition of HP-β-CD to PVP K90/spironolactone composites.…”
