Drinking water pollutants may affect the immune system: concerns regarding COVID-19 health effects

Abstract: The current coronavirus pandemic is leading to significant impacts on the planet, changing our way of life. Although the COVID-19 virus mechanisms of action and pathogenesis are still under extensive research, immune system effects are evident, leading, in many cases, to respiratory distress. Although apparent pollution reduction has been noticed by the population, environmental and human health impacts due to the increased use of plastic waste and disinfectants is concerning. One of the main routes of human e… Show more

“…In turn, the link between environmental pollution and immunity is of particular interest as various pollutants may provoke immunotoxic effects. Among these pollutants, some toxic metals can cause immunotoxicity in humans ( Cohen, 2018 ; Hultman and Pollard KM, 2015; Quinete and Hauser-Davis, 2021 ). Environmental factors, such as air and drinking water contaminants, may contribute to the increased prevalence of allergies and autoimmune diseases, many of which are due to the activity of Th17 T cells ( Tsatsakis et al, 2020 ).…”

“…One of the main sources of human exposure to pollutants is through drinking water [ 140 ]. This directs the attention to some major contaminants in drinking water known to be immune-toxic and drinking water routes, which could possibly compromise the effective immune response of humans [ 146 , 147 ].…”
