The ethnological knowledge of mushrooms despite its millennial existence and its empirical documentation are more recent phenomena. In Africa, the knowledge of their historical uses as food, medicine, source of income and small scale businesses, and the sociological impacts (myth, culture and spirituality) are apparently threatened due to slow ethnomycology research drive. The poor identification and documentation of edible and medicinal species of mushrooms in many developing nations have created some degrees of inconsistencies in their usages relative to folk medicine practice, food and mythological beliefs. Their relevance in modern day pharmaceutics and nutraceuticals is a product of human experimentation over time. Factors that may be anthropogenic, ethnographic, ethnoecological/environmental have been implicated in mushrooms underutilization and under-exploration of mushrooms in West Africa. Ethnomycological literatures on West Africa are scant, random, are limited in scope and fraught with taxonomic inconsistencies. This paper is based on extant ethnomycology treatise and aims at representing an integrative knowledge of useful mushrooms of West Africa and their uses vis-a-vis indigent cultures.

Aim of study:This study focused on the analysis of structural and spatial patterns of Isoberlinia spp stands according to topographic units.Area of study: Data collection were carried out within the Zouzounkan forest reserve, located in Southern Benin.Material and Methods: Square plots of 1 ha were considered for the forest inventory in which, geographical coordinates of Isoberlinia individuals were recorded. Ripley's K function was used to assess the spatial patterns of the species in the forest whereas dendrometric and ecological parameters was computed to analyze the structure of the species populations. Possible impact of topographic units of the forest reserve on dendrometric and spatial patterns of trees was assessed.Main results: The results show that Isoberlinia spp. is more abundant on the hill side than on the top and down hills. Aggregative spatial distribution of trees was found across topographic units with more aggregation on the hill side. However beyond a radius of 8 m aggregation decreased. Furthermore, significant difference was noted on dendrometric patterns of Isoberlinia trees according to topographic unit.Research highlights: Results obtained suggest that effective conservation strategy of Isoberlinia trees in Zouzoukan forest reserve should take into account topographical patterns.

Une étude ethnobotanique sur un échantillon de 135 personnes a permis de définir le rôle de l'homme et les utilisations des ressources végétales au sein des forêts claires à Isoberlinia du domaine soudanien au Nord-Togo. Les caractéristiques structurales et les modes de régénération ont été étudiés sur 28 placeaux de 20 x 20 m installés dans six forêts villageoises à accès libre et 28 autres placeaux situés dans la réserve de faune d'Alédjo ayant un statut de protection. La matrice " utilisations x personnes enquêtées " a été soumise à la classification ascendante hiérarchique grâce au logiciel Statistica 6.0. Elle a permis de confirmer le rôle écologique, agricole, économique et vital des ressources végétales à 35 % de dissemblance. Le mode actuel d'exploitation des forêts locales compromet leur pérennité, surtout en l'absence de mesures de sauvegarde. La richesse spécifique est assez semblable dans les deux types de forêts claires. Les indices de Shannon (3,77 bits) et d'équitabilité de Piélou (0,68) sont plus élevés dans les forêts protégées que dans celles à accès libre (3,31 bits ; 0,53). Ce qui suggère que l'absence d'activités anthropiques favorise une meilleure conservation de la diversité des forêts qui se régénèrent par semis, par rejets de souche et par drageons. La densité (475 tiges/ha), la surface terrière (15,2 m²/ha), le diamètre moyen (23,9 cm) et la hauteur moyenne (15,5 m) des arbres sont plus élevés dans les forêts protégées que dans celles non protégées (300 tiges/ha ; 13,9 m²/ha ; 18,8 cm ; 11,9 m).
