“…Interestingly, others have reported acidosis favors renal mercurial accumulation (Cafruny 1963 1, but by histochemical means this could not be coi~firmed for PCMB. The radioactivity was mainly distributed in the micro-soma1 and mitochondi-ial fractions as observed by others (Grief et al 1956;Bergstrand et al 1959). However, whereas nonacidotic kidneys contained 37%' in the microsomal fraction and 31 % in the mitochondrial, acidotic kidneys had a reverse distribution with 39% in the mitochondria1 and only 30% associated with the microsomal fraction; noteworthy is the fact that the absolute activity in the microsomal fraction remains constant regardless of acidosis.…”

“…We suggest that some "critical lock and key" relationship 8 diuretic activity, for we have been unable to synthesize and test such compounds. Furthermore, certain compounds (13), most notably Novasurol, have been assigned structures which are in opposition to this thesis.…”

“…Mercuhydring (6,7) and Neohydring (8,9) have been shown to disappear rapidly from the blood stream following intravenous administration and to accumulate in the renal cortex in high concentration. Both drugs are highly bound to plasma proteins, hence are sparingly filtered through the glomerular capillaries, yet both are rapidly eliminated in the urine.…”

“…If one makes the logical assumption that organic mercurial compounds combined reversibly with certain cellular enzymes to render them inactive, the predominant renal action of these compounds is understandable on the basis of their high concentration in renal tubular cells. According to Greif, Sullivan, Jacobs, and Pitts (22), the mercury is most highly bound per mg. of nitrogen by the soluble protein fraction of the cells of the outermost layers of the renal cortex. However, mercury is firmly fixed, though in somewhat lesser concentration, in the mitochondrial fraction of these cells.…”
