Distributed group support: The effects of voting Tools on group perceptions of media richness

Abstract: Abstract.Decision groups distributed both temporally and geographically encounter a multitude of coordination problems. This experiment used a set of GDSS Tools called "List" and "Vote," and alternative interaction management procedures, as mechanisms for coordinating distributed groups using a computer conferencing system and for structuring group processes. The study examined media richness using a modification of the adjective-pairs developed by Zmud, Lind, and Young (1990). The Tools significantly improved… Show more

“…Notably, Dufner et al [20] found that groups using a simple feature for visualizing group convergence perceived the medium as richer and less ambiguous than did control groups. Without this lightweight HCI enhancement, these groups had to "comb through many comments without seeing at a glance the extent to which consensus had been reached" [20, p. 240].…”

“…Students can collaborate using e-mail or computer mediated conferencing (CMC) systems to support their group work and to communicate with one another. However, groups distributed in space and time have serious coordination problems [Dufner et al, 1994;Dufner et al, 1995]. CMC systems and e-mail provide limited structures for coordinating asynchronous collaboration.…”

“…We feel there is scope for further exploration of this issue. There is existing experimental research which suggests that even very simple structuring tools, such as listing and voting tools ameliorate the perception of the distributed mode of communication as an inexpressive and restrictive medium (Dufner et al, 1995) and some Delphi researchers report positive experiences with graphical visualisation techniques (Scheele, 1975).…”
