Digitalizing Historical Consciousness

Abstract: What is a "historical" video game, let alone a successful one? It is difficult to answer this question because all our definitions of history have been constructed in a linear-narrative cultural context that is currently being challenged and in large part displaced by digital media, especially video games. I therefore consider this question from the point of view of historical semantics and in relation to the impact of digital technology on all aspects of the historiographical operation, from the establishment… Show more

“…Historians claims that today people's historical consciousness -more than books and lectures -emerges from films and TV series [12] [13]. It is also possible to add computer games [14] to this pool of audio-visual contributions to historical consciousness. Steve F. Anderson has presented the term Technologies of History, which represents a view on how media practices "help us think about the world, the past, and our potential to act as historical and political agents" [15].…”

“…As Fogu argues, the playing of such a game, based in historical reality and experienced through immersive gameplay, 'would surely provide virtual memories of something perceived as real.' 30 'Virtual memories', Fogu hypothesises, are likely to be created by gameplay, rather than via other media such as film and television, because of the distinguishing element of 'action'. 31 The player of a videogame does more than witness, he or she participates, their 'work' is 'a mixture of the physical and the mental.'…”
