The advancement of intelligent technology has propelled the development of smart unmanned vessels into a new phase. To address the urgent demands of current smart ship development, this paper develops a comprehensive ship digital twin system based on a virtual-real mapping algorithm, focusing on the fundamental elements of digital twin model construction. Using the smart unmanned experimental ship Dolphin 1 as a prototype, a digital twin virtual model is proposed. This system leverages real-time internal and external data from the entire vessel to track its navigational status, performance indicators, sailing trends, and surrounding flow field information, offering coordinated “human-machine” navigation assistance. Based on historical data collected from the vessel's long-term navigation, a real-time precise prediction of the vessel's navigational state and hydrodynamic performance is conducted using physics-informed neural network algorithm. This establishes a self-learning iterative virtual-physical mapping model that enables autonomous updates and evolution. As the real navigation data of the vessel continuously update, the virtual model can more accurately simulate the vessel's state in real time. The proposed digital twin model has been tested through sea trials under real sea conditions, demonstrating its high accuracy, robustness, and potential for enhancing navigational safety and efficiency. This system marks a significant step forward in the integration of digital twin technology with maritime navigation, providing a valuable tool for the future development of smart shipping.

In today's ever-changing world, maritime transportation, and cargo ships, specifically, hold a crucial position in global supply chains and international trade. Guaranteeing the reliability, effectiveness, and safety of their operations is an increasingly urgent concern, as unexpected malfunctions and inadequacies in maintenance systems have the potential to cause significant losses, lengthy delays, and environmental hazards. In this regard, developing effective strategies to enhance the quality and efficiency of cargo ship maintenance systems is crucial. Digital technologies and innovative approaches can resolve various issues related to predicting breakdowns, optimizing maintenance processes, and monitoring equipment conditions. Nevertheless, delayed implementation of these strategies can result in loss of competitiveness and unnecessary expenses. The objective of this article is to devise a conceptual solution that enhances the efficiency of cargo ship maintenance systems through digital strategies. By assessing existing approaches, substantiating their pros and cons, the author endeavors to recognize the most apt methodologies and resolutions that enhance maintenance productivity, curtail expenses, and guarantee safe navigation. The concrete necessity to design digital strategies for cargo ship maintenance highlights the importance of this study. By analyzing the current research in the field, this study aims to enhance waterborne transport efficiency and address key issues in the transportation sector. The implementation of digital strategies in cargo ship maintenance would enhance the efficiency of the maintenance system. Thanks to these tools, the system will become more adaptable, predictable, and resource-efficient, ultimately improving the quality of maintenance, and lowering costs

In the second half of the 20th and the beginning of this century, large-scale maritime accidents created catastrophic environmental pollution, some of which is on an irreversible scale. Decision support systems can provide a picture of the maritime scene to the decision-makers, which they monitor by keeping the marine environment variables up to date, in search and rescue and pollution response operations after maritime accidents. In favor of Industry 4.0, systems use all dynamic data of the marine environment, and the authorities that provide this data have been integrated on an internet basis. The chapter aims to present perspectives on how this internet-based integration provided by Industry 4.0 can feed the human factor for the prevention of the marine environment and, by this means, the role of Industry 5.0 in sustainable marine environment management.
