Differential Chaos Shift Keying: A Robust Modulation Scheme for Power-Line Communications

Abstract: Abstract-The past few years have witnessed a tremendous development in power-line communications (PLC) for the realization of smart grids. Since power lines were not originally intended for conveying high frequency signals, any communication over these lines would be exposed to severe adversarial factors, such as interference, impulsive and phase noise. This elucidates the importance of employing robust modulation techniques and motivates research in this direction. Indeed, the aim of the paper is to propose a… Show more

“…The authors in [216] and [217] investigated for the first time the application of non-coherent chaos based modulation techniques for power line communications (PLC). In [216], the authors proposed a differential chaos shift keying (DCSK) modulation scheme as a potential candidate for smart grid communication networks since this class of non-coherent modulation is very robust against linear and non-linear channel distortions.…”

“…In [216], the authors proposed a differential chaos shift keying (DCSK) modulation scheme as a potential candidate for smart grid communication networks since this class of non-coherent modulation is very robust against linear and non-linear channel distortions. In their work, a simulator is developed to verify the performance of the proposed DCSK against direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) and direct sequence differential phase shift keying (DS-DPSK).…”

“…Due to numerous superior inherent characteristics of chaotic signals such as noise-like wavelet, sensitive dependence on initial conditions, low probability of intercept, and δ-like self-correlation functions, the chaosbased communication technology has been widely applied in many communication scenarios, for instance, multi-user spread-spectrum communications, ultra-wideband systems (UWB), power-line communications, cognitive radio systems and secure communication systems [1][2][3][4][5].…”
