Different Body Measurement and Body Weight Prediction of Jamuna Basin Sheep in Bangladesh

Abstract: The aim of this study was to estimate different body measurements and derive prediction equation for live weight of Jamuna basin sheep using different body measurement. A total of 520 individual records of sheep (47 males and 473 females) including all temporary at nine-month age (320), first pair permanent at 1.6 year age (161) and 2nd pair permanent at two years age (39) were collected from two Upazila of Sherpur district. Body weight (BW) was taken using a weighing scale and different measurements were take… Show more

“…Jamuna basin lambs achieved average daily gain (ADG) 46-55g in active growing phase and marketed for slaughter at 9-12 months of age weighing about 15-18 kg (Hashem et al, 2020). The body weight information can be used in determining the value of animals and efficiency of rearing (Sun et al, 2020). Sheep farming has been also significant in the development and economic growth in different developed countries.…”

“…The weight order among Nodes 1-4 was found to be Node 1<Node 2<Node 3<Node 4 (Adjusted p=0.000, F=32.37, df1=3, df2=148), because of the significant differences in BW. Nodes 5,7,9,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,and 18 were the terminal nodes. The CHAID algorithm declared HG as the most significant predictor of live BW.…”

“…In the literature, various reports found a great figure for the estimation of live BW using the main predictors, such as morphological and testicular measurements in different sheep and goat breeds. Different researchers used various statistical techniques, that is, correlation analysis [3], principal component analysis in multiple linear regressions [4], and simple and multiple linear regressions [5][6][7][8][9] for live BW prediction. In terms of the classical assumptions, the Chi-square automatic interaction detector (CHAID), exhaustive CHAID, classification and regression tree (CART), and artificial neural network (ANN) types, such as the radial basis function (RBF) and multilayer perceptron with one (MLP1) and two (MLP2) hidden layers, have recently been used to perfectly indicate the body measurements in relation to live BW in sheep and goat breeding studies [10][11][12].…”

“…Sheep has a major share of the animal protein industry, although meat quality is affected by a variety of factors. Several factors, such as species, gender, growth rate and maturation, diet, genetic factors, disease status, medication and hormone use, rearing conditions, temperature, relative humidity, and general husbandry practices have direct and indirect effects on meat quality (Hashem et al, 2013;Hossain et al, 2021a and2021b;Moniruzzaman et al, 2002;Rana et al, 2014;Baset et al, 2003;Sarkar et al, 2008;Sun et al, 2020), resulting in changes in meat consumption or marketing. Meat quality and price are affected by carcass weight.…”
