Development of electrosprayed mucoadhesive chitosan microparticles

Abstract: The efficacy of chitosan (CS) to be used as drug delivery carrier has previously been reported. However, limited work has been pursued to produce stable and mucoadhesive CS electrosprayed particles for oral drug delivery, which is the aim of this study. Various CS types with different molecular weight (MW), degree of deacetylation (DD), and degree of polymerization (DP) were assessed. In addition, the effect of the solvent composition was also investigated. Results showed that stable CS electrosprayed particle… Show more

“…When utilizing electrospray for the preparation of the chitosan particles optimization is needed. Previously, the three chitosan types of HMC + (70, 85 and 90) have been optimized in terms of forming chitosan stable microparticles (24). It has been an area of focus to investigate which of the three chitosan types would be most suited for the purpose of oral vaccination.…”

“…For the preparation of the chitosan particles with OVA and Quil-A, a similar method was used as described in the literature (24), but in this study with the addition of antigen and adjuvant to the particles. Here, 150 mg of OVA and 15 mg of Quil-A were diluted in 4.5 mL of water, then 0.3 g of chitosan was dispersed, followed by the addition of 0.5 mL of AA in the case of HMC + 70/5 and HMC + 85/5, while for HMC + 90/10, 3.5 mL of water and 1.5 mL of AA were added.…”

“…1 The known characteristics of chitosan are dependent on multiple items: deacetylation degree, distribution of acetyl groups within the chain, and the polysaccharide molecular weight. 2 Chitosan, which is composed of glucosamine and N-acetyl glucosamine, 3 has been reported to have multiple bioactivities such as reducing cholesterol levels, 4 involving the hemostatic processes, 5 accelerating wound healing, 6 and inhibiting tumor growth. 7 Chitosan is considered a useful compound in the biomedical, food, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical fields due to its remarkable features, which include biocompatibility, biodegradability, and safety.…”
