Detoxified castor meal in substitution of soybean meal in sheep diet: growth performance, carcass characteristics and meat yield

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the intake, digestibility, performance, and carcass characteristics of lambs fed different levels of replacement (0, 15, 30, and 45 % based on dry matter, DM) of soybean meal (SM) by detoxified castor meal (DCM). Twenty-four and 32 intact hair lambs of nondescript breed (21.7 ± 2.6 kg of initial average body weight and approximately 10 months old) were used, respectively, in the intake and digestibility and performance experiments. The diets were composed of buffel grass h… Show more

“…Castor bean meal may be an economically viable alternative in ruminant feeding systems. The current literature related to CBM for ruminants has mainly targeted nutritional value and production performance for feedlot cattle and sheep (DINIZ et al, 2010;MENEZES et al, 2016;POMPEU et al, 2012), and there is little information about the effects of its use in supplements for grazing ruminants, especially growing sheep. Thus, it is necessary to establish of the optimum inclusion of CBM in supplements for grazing lambs.…”

“…[4][5][6][7] Symptoms such as pain, numbness, and loss of sensation, especially the increasement of vibration and thermal perception threshold on distal lower extremity may be indicative of neuropathy and it affects approximately 50% of the individuals with diabetes. [8][9][10][11] Proprioceptive exercises are included in rehabilitation in order to reduce somatosensory loss and increase balance abilities. [12][13][14] However, disruption in balance control of geriatric individuals are not only associated with diabetic neuropathy.…”

“…This discrepancy in the in vivo performance of the kids was undoubtedly due to the increase in milk production. (Menezes et al, 2016). However, the use of detoxified castor bean meal in place of soybean meal can contribute to the reduced production and milk composition in cows (Cobianchi et al, 2012) and reduced the digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, and total carbohydrates in finishing animals (Silva et al, 2011).…”
