Determination of ochratoxin a in beer by high-performance liquid chromatography

Abstract: SummaryOchratoxin A (OTA) is a nephrotoxic and nephrocarcinogenic mycotoxin commonly produced by several ubiquitous Aspergillus and Penicillium species. OTA is found predominantly in cereals and derived products, and therefore OTA may be transferred into beer from contaminated grain. Thirty-five samples of German beers were analyzed: OTA was extracted with toluene and purified by solid phase extraction using silica cartridges. OTA was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detec… Show more

“…The incidence found in Brazilian beer in the present survey (4.8%) is therefore low. The levels found, on the other hand are higher then the levels reported by other countries by various orders of magnitude 12,13,21,26,27,35,47,52,53 .…”

“…No positive results for OTA presence were detected in any of the beer samples. German beers (35 samples) were analyzed by DEGELMANN et al 13 and OTA levels in the range of 0.1-0.2 ng.mL -1 were found in 9 beer samples, 21 samples contained trace amounts of OTA (<0.1 ng.mL -1 ) and in 5 samples no OTA was detectable. SCOTT and KANHERE 35 found traces of OTA in 26 out of 46 samples of Canadian and imported beers.…”

“…LEGARDA & BURDASPAL [13] verified the presence of OTA in 37 of 38 Spanish beers (97.4%) with mean value of 24pg/mL. DEGELMANN et al [4] verified in 35 samples of German beers OTA levels in the range of 100 200ng/mL in 9 beer samples, 21 samples contained trace amounts of OTA and in 5 samples no OTA was detectable. In 2000, VISCONTI, PASCALE & CENTONZE [31] found OTA in different brands of beer produced in Europe and Italy.…”

“…Thus, the method can be a good confirmatory test for samples already turned out to be positive with fluorescence detection. The same procedure was applied by the same group (Degelmann et al, 1999) for the detection of OTA in beer. Again, the LC/MS/MS method was used mainly for confirmatory purposes, after a positive sample was detected by LC/FLD.…”
