Determination of Air Pollutant Concentrations in Plant Species in Relation to Pollution Sources

Abstract: Air quality has been a major health issue in urban areas in recent decades. Human activities release a large number of pollutants into the atmosphere which has a direct impact on plant health and leads to ecosystem degradation. The objective of this study is to contribute to a better evaluation of the impact of the air quality of the city of Togo on biological resources. The determination of pollutants was done on samples of plant species with a strong link with the source of pollution. The determination of Su… Show more

“…Chemical weathering due to the pollution of the granite rock art relief area with pollution gases and water, decomposed the mineral components of the granite, especially for native elements [21] [22]. Heavy traffic on roads, landfills and industries is the source of atmospheric pollution worldwide [23]. Chemical decomposition always occurs for rock formations close to gases and water, which they are often the surface layers [24], as in the relief, subject of the study.…”

“…These gases are released into the atmosphere and accumulate in vegetation in urban areas. There is a positional correlation between NO2 and SO2 levels in the atmosphere (Atator et al 2021). In Europe, atmospheric disturbances caused by increases in pollutant pollutants NO2 and SO2 are reported to be highly critical (Jayalal et al 2017).…”

“…Biodiversity Loss: Air pollution poses a significant threat to biodiversity, with potential consequences for the stability and functioning of ecosystems (Cotrozzi et al, 2018;Stevens et al, 2020;Thimmegowda et al, 2020). High levels of air pollutants can harm plants, including crop species, by damaging their leaves, reducing photosynthesis, and interfering with nutrient uptake (Atator et al, 2021). Accordingly, this can lead to reduced crop yields, decreased food availability, and disordered ecological interactions.…”
