Determinants and Development of Schools in Organization Theory

Show more

“…Centripetal forces enable centrifugal forces and vice versa, enabling an interplay between existing and new knowledge vital for the 'disciplined imagination' of theory development (Weick, 1989). Ultimately, we argue that balancing continuity and novelty will further increase paradox research's scope on its way to becoming a school of thought in organization theory (McKinley et al, 1999).…”

“…Indeed, understanding centripetal and centrifugal forces and their interplay can help surface and open the remaining 'black boxes' of paradox theory. And even a mature school of thought should never go unchallenged, but rather benefits from both continuity (centripetal forces) and novelty (centrifugal forces) (McKinley, Mone, and Moon, 1999).…”

“…These mechanisms can also be responsible for diffusion beyond the frontiers of the components, since the reputation achieved by certain researchers, in addition to the fact that they are also the most cited, make them gatekeepers for the development of new works. Additionally, they can bring legitimacy to these studies, establishing a contact with knowledge that is already recognized and considered valid (McKinley, Mone, & Moon, 1999).…”

“…The acceptance and spread of new paradigms or schools of thought depends on their balance between continuity and novelty, as well as their scope (McKinley, Mone, & Moon, 1999). We argue that the institution-based view has these attributes, thus propelling its rise to become a paradigm.…”
