The aim of this contribution is to summarize our knowledge of the morphology of the basement membrane (BM). The first step in this direction is the attempt to define this term. The BM is composed of the Lamina lucida, densa, and fibroreticularis. Subsequently, the historical development of this term is discussed. Our main interest is, of course, focused on the description of the BM-structure up to the macromolecular level and the special forms of this structure. This is supplemented by discussing its chemical composition and establishing a relationship between morphology and biochemistry. The obtained findings yielded some indications as to the molecular composition of the BM which may serve for the construction of "models." The composition of the Lamina lucida (L.l.) and the Lamina or Pars fibroreticularis (L.f.) must be discussed separately, since, if present, they show a different and strongly varying structure (L.f.). An important aspect is the function of this extracellular layer which comprises mechanical tasks up to inductive effects. Finally, the concepts of the formation of the BM, especially of the Lamina densa (L.d.), are summarized. It obviously consists of a sequence of individual steps which starts with expression and secretion of the L.d.-components and is followed by an induction of integrin expression.

The prenatal development of the cat's mandibular and parotid gland was examined by means of serial section of 36 cat embryos at 14-62 days of development. Both glands were excised from the epithelium of the primitive oral cavity and branched up to day 36 of the branching phase into a specific connective tissue. This tissue contained besides fine collagenous fibres, a high amount of proteoglycans. In the subsequent separation phase, ducts and acini differentiated themselves in primitive lobules which were separated by connective tissue. In the prenatal differentiation phase, from about day 50 up to birth, intercalated ducts and striated ducts were formed. In the acini, mucous and serous cells contained different amounts of complex carbohydrates. This secretory component changed shortly before birth.

The ultrastructure of the different junctional complexes of the stratified epithelium of the hamster vagina at late metestrus has been studied both under normal conditions and after perfusion with EDTA. Four types of junctions are described through which the vaginal cells adhere both to each other and to the basement membrane. These junctions are: the typical desmosome; the tight junction; the adhering band, and the basal junction. After the calcium depletion due to EDTA, the desmosomes open up and there is a disappearance of the central laminar density. This causes the extension of the intercellular spaces. The other junctions, with the exception of the adhering bands in the vicinity of the desmosomes, appear to be resistent to EDTA. These EDTA‐induced changes are similar to those produced by leucocyte invasion of the vaginal epithelium in metestrus.
