Criterion-related validity of the 20-m shuttle run test in youths aged 13–19 years

Abstract: We assessed the agreement between maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) measured directly when performing the 20-m shuttle run test and estimated VO2max from five different equations (i.e., Barnett, equations a and b; Leger; Matsuzaka; and Ruiz) in youths. The 20-m shuttle run test was performed by 26 girls (mean age 14.6 years, s = 1.5; body mass 57.2 kg, s = 8.9; height 1.60 m, s = 0.06) and 22 boys (age 15.0 years, s = 1.6; body mass 63.5 kg, s = 11.5; height 1.70 m, s = 0.01). The participants wore a portabl… Show more

“…Results of scientific researches in the field of medical-biological and pedagogic sciences show, that physical exercises are the most powerful means, capable to ensure general and purposeful development of functions and systems of adolescents' organisms (Ruiz, Silva, & Oliveira, 2009;Santos, Mota, & Santos, 2014). This fact is proved by the data about correspondence of tests to national criteria of children's health (Santos, Mota, & Santos, 2014) and by adequacy of the offered tests to children's age (Castro-Piñero, Mora, & GonzalezMontesinos, 2009;Gavin, Christine, & Daniel, 2012).…”

“…Oxygen uptake can be directly measured whilst performing Weld tasks, such as running, which allows for the more direct measurement of a number of physiological variables (Ruiz et al 2009). Although Leger and Lambert (1982) used a retroextrapolation method, previously been found to be valid (r = 0.92) and accurate (SEE = 3.21 ml kg ¡1 min ¡1 ) for the determination of VO 2 max after maximal 20-m MSRT (Leger and Boucher 1980), we analysed inspired and expired gases continuously in Weld, breath by breath, through a portable gas analyser (K4b 2 , Cosmed, Rome, Italy), which had been previously validated (McLaughlin et al 2001).…”

“…However, it is unclear which regression equation is most accurate when used in the same population of children. Whilst a recent study by Ruiz et al (2009) has addressed the criterion validity of the 20-m MSRT to predict peak VO 2 in 13-19 year olds, it is currently unclear which equation is most appropriate for younger children.…”

“…Este test es de incrementos y continuo (sin pausas) y de aceleración y desaceleración (ir y volver), y ha sido validado y descrito en varias publicaciones (33)(34)(35)(36)(37)(38). Consiste en correr el mayor tiempo posible en doble sentido (ida y vuelta) y entre dos líneas separadas por 20 m, a un ritmo impuesto por una señal sonora.…”
