Comparing several equations that predict peak VO2 using the 20-m multistage-shuttle run-test in 8–10-year-old children

Abstract: This study compared the validity of reported equations as predictors of peak VO(2) in 8-10-year-old children. Participants (90 boys and girls aged 8-10 years) performed the multistage-shuttle-run-test (MSRT) and peak VO(2) was measured in field using a portable gas analyser. The equations that estimated peak VO(2) from the MSRT performance were chosen according to the age range of this study. As follows, the FITNESSGRAM reports and the equations of Leger et al. (Can J Appl Sport Sci 5: 77-84, 1988), Barnett et… Show more

“…It is an excellent tool for population-based surveillance and monitoring because it demonstrates strong-to-very strong test–retest reliability, and moderate-to-strong validity 20. The 20mSRT also has excellent field-based utility due to its low cost, flexibility with testing locations (indoors, outdoors, smaller spaces) and its ability to test multiple individuals simultaneously with minimal equipment and personnel 20 24 25. In order to extend the utility of the 20mSRT as a surveillance instrument, there is a need for international norms, which, to date, have only been published for a single 20mSRT metric or for selected geographical regions,20 including Europe,26 North America27 and Oceania 28.…”

“…Voss and Sandercock (28) reported that the PACER elicits a maximal effort in 11-to 16-yr olds, evidenced by HR peak . McVeigh et al (16) compared the HR peak achieved during the PACER (boys = 203 beatsImin j1 ; girls = 201 beatsImin j1 ) to a treadmill GXT (boys = 200 beatsImin j1 ; girls = 204 beatsImin j1 ) in 13-to 14-yr-old youths.Currently, only three studies (15,17,24) involving the youth have used portable gas analyzers to obtain measured V O 2peak values during the PACER. In the studies conducted by Ruiz et al (24) and Melo et al (17), the V O 2peak was…”
