O objetivo do trabalho foi estudar o comportamento fenológico do cultivar de cebola Empasc 352 – Bola Precoce quando submetido às diferentes condições climáticas e fotoperiódicas em condições de clima subtropical de Santa Catarina, SC, Brazil. Os tratamentos consistiram de 10 épocas de semeaduras, distanciadas em uma semana, repetidas no período 15/03 à 17/05 em quatro anos. Os resultados revelam que a relação entre as datas de semeadura e a duração em dias até o transplante não é linear, podendo ser representada por um polinômio de segundo grau, onde as últimas datas de semeaduras apresentam um significativo aumento na duração semeadura-transplante. À medida em que as épocas de semeaduras foram postergadas ocorreu uma diminuição do período entre transplante-colheita. A relação entre a duração da fase semeadura-transplante e transplante-colheita foi inversa, ou seja, maiores durações da fase semeadura-transplante menores as fases de transplante-colheita. A data de semeadura foi o principal responsável pela variação da duração do ciclo da cebola. Para cada dois dias de avanço na data de semeadura ocorreu uma postergação na data de transplante em três dias.

Information related to phosphate fertilization and coated phosphate fertilizer in onion is scarce. Thus, this study was carried out to evaluate agronomic efficiency, production and nutritional characteristics of triple superphosphate coated with polymers in onion cultivated in contrasting texture soils. Two experiments were carried out under protected conditions in pots containing 5 kg soil. The experimental design was completely randomized with treatments arranged in a 2 x 5 factorial: triple superphosphate (TSP) and polymer-coated triple superphosphate (TSP+P) applied in five phosphorus rates: Dystroferric Red Latosol (LVdf) (clayey) = 0; 100; 200; 400; 800 mg P 2 O 5 kg-1 , and Quartzarenic Neosol (sandy) = 0; 75; 150; 300; 600 mg P 2 O 5 kg-1 , with three replications. Results indicated that polymer-coated TSP showed no difference for bulb mass and agronomic efficiency for phosphorus fertilization. Agronomic efficiency of phosphorus fertilization decreased with the increase in the amount of phosphorus applied. Phosphorus accumulation for onion bulb cultivated in Dystroferric Red Latosol (LVdf) was higher with the use of polymer-coated triple superphosphate. Growth, production and nutritional characteristics in onion were affected by phosphorus. The highest bulbs mass production and phosphorus accumulation occurred at the doses of 783; 629 mg kg-1 P 2 O 5 (Dystroferric Red Latosol-LVdf), and of 406; 600 mg kg-1 P 2 O 5 (Quartzarenic Neosol-RQ).

Productivity, physicochemical quality and early flowering resistance of experimental onion hybrids

In order to produce bulbs or seeds, onion plants depend on genotype X environment interaction. Thus, breeders shall select the genotypes based on the climatic conditions of each producing region. This study aimed to evaluate 17 experimental onion hybrids and two commercial genotypes (‘Bella Dura’ and ‘Buccaneer’), based on agronomic, physicochemical attributes of the bulbs and resistance to early flowering under subtropical conditions. Joint analysis of variance and phenotypic divergence estimated through principal component analysis (PCA) and Ward’s hierarchical clustering were performed. We observed that the time of transplantation affected the agronomic traits more than the physicochemical traits, not affecting the percentage of early flowering of the genotypes. The first transplant season provided higher bulb productivity, whereas the second season reduced the cycle and productivity. Hybrids H1, H17 and ‘Buccaneer’ showed flowering rate lower than 3%. Among the experimental hybrids, H2 showed higher productivity when comparing with commercial cultivars, and H1, H12 and H14 were equivalent to them. However, H12 showed the highest early flowering rate (43%). Thus, considering the experimental genotypes evaluated under subtropical conditions, H1, H2, and H14, showed potential for commercial use or as potential parents in advancing the breeding program, as they stood out for presenting good yield, bulb quality and low percentage of early flowering.
