Yetkinlik bir kişinin görevleri doğru ve ustaca yapabilmesi için sahip olması gereken bilgi, beceri, yetenek, davranışlar ya da kapasitedir. Yetkinlik, hemşireler için önemli kriterlerdendir. Hemşirelikte yetkinlik çok boyutlu olduğundan üzerinde uzlaşılan ortak bir tanımı yoktur. Bilimsel yenilikler ve teknolojik gelişmeler hemşirelerin bu koşullara uyum sağlamasını, bakım gereksinimi ve beklentileri giderek artan hasta grubuna hizmet vermesini, farklı disiplinlerle bir arada çalışmasını ve çok sayıda hizmetin koordinasyonunu sağlamasını gerektirmektedir. Günümüzde hemşirelerin sağlık hizmetlerinin değişen yapısına uyum sağlamaları gerekliliği yetkinlik kavramını gündeme getirirken, yetkinlik geliştirmenin kolay olmadığı vurgulanmaktadır. Yetkinliği belirleyen özelliklerin ve yetkinliği etkileyen değişkenlerin bilinmesi, mezuniyet öncesinden başlayarak okul ve hastane yönetiminin işbirliğine dayanan ve hemşirelerin de içinde olduğu bir program oluşturmanın yetkinlik geliştirmeye katkı sağlayabileceği vurgulanmaktadır. Bu makalede hemşirelikte yetkinlik geliştirme ile ilgili literatürün incelenmesiyle, yöneticiler ve hemşirelerin konu ile ilgili gereksinimlerinin karşılanmasına katkı sağlanması amaçlanmıştır.

Introduction: The essential problems in providing quality and safety services to patients, rapid changes in health care settings as well as information technology require educational revision. Competency-based curriculum focuses on set of skills that students should achieve. This study reviewed characteristics of competency-based curriculum in psychiatric nursing. Methods: A literature review about a competencybased curriculum in psychiatric mental health nursing was carried out by searching databases including Iran Medex, Iran Doc, and Pub Med with key words such as competency-based education, competencybased curriculum, and competency-based curriculum in psychiatric mental health nursing. No time limitation was considered. Results: Results revealed that over 30 literatures have been done about nursing curriculum, but just several studies were done regarding competency-based curriculum and just a few about competency-based curriculum in psychiatric mental health nursing. Conclusion: Competencybased curriculum development is one of the essential steps to facilitate teaching-learning process. The revision of curriculum may decrease theory-practice gap and pave the way for graduates to have essential competences for their roles.

Background: Systems thinking is a core competency in nursing education. The assessment of knowledge, awareness and value of, and self-efficacy for teaching systems thinking among faculty is an important step to plan faculty development process. Method: A 17-item faculty questionnaire was developed to assess the knowledge, awareness and value of, and self-efficacy for teaching systems thinking to nursing students as a part of a pilot study. The questionnaire was administered to the nursing faculty at a nursing school in the Midwest region (response rate: 19.49%; 20/92). Results: All participants had partial knowledge and awareness of systems thinking. Most of them valued systems thinking and considered it an important inclusion in the nursing course. Although educators were ready for this, they were only moderately comfortable in teaching systems thinking at the time of the survey. Conclusions: Faculty training on systems thinking is proposed, and specific techniques are suggested. Conducting a faculty assessment survey is an important step in tailoring the faculty development process.
