¿Cooptar o reprimir?

Show more

“…On the other hand, and closely connected with the previous point, our results also provide evidence to the discussion on subnational authoritarianisms and their impact on journalism (e.g. Salazar, 2019, 2020; Salazar, 2018). That is, as an outcome of the so-called political transition (when the hegemonic Institutional Revolutionary Party—PRI—lost the presidency for the first time in 2000), a fragmentation of political power has occurred as well.…”

“…However, since the head of the federal government could no longer exert control over the whole country, as their PRI predecessors did because of this party's historical centralization of power, local political strongholds gained salience. That is, whilst the presidential figure weakened, mayors and governors strengthened their positions and therefore, power was concentrated without a system of checks and balances (Del Palacio et al, 2020;González & Echeverría, 2018;Guerrero & Márquez, 2014;Salazar, 2019Salazar, , 2020Salazar, 2018). As we have discussed here, the discretional allocation of government advertising, the collusion between authorities and organized crime, and constant aggressions against the press by both armed forces and gangs exemplify this phenomenon.…”

“…The studies of Salazar (2018Salazar ( , 2020 contrast the democratic national processes in the reforms of 2013 and other federal efforts with the hegemonic subnational conditions. Some expressions of them are attacks on the press by repressing them or by co-optation.…”
