Consultant surgeons' opinion of the skills required of basic surgical trainees

Abstract: This study has identified the skills considered necessary by consultant surgeons in Scotland for a successful surgical career. Contrary to expectation, consultant surgeons value many generic skills more highly than technical skills, indicating that they value well rounded doctors, not just those with technical ability. The characteristics identified are being used to develop an assessment tool for use on basic surgical trainees.

“…Obviously, passing a motor skills test on its own does not guarantee that the individual is competent in all the required domains. Good motor skills are only one of the necessary requirements to become a competent laparoscopic surgeon [16,17]. On the other hand, if a trainee is unable to pass a validated simulation test or demonstrate improvement during training, then a surgical career is questionable.…”

“…This checklist's content was systematically derived using a Delphi survey of surgeons in Scotland to establish the 'essential' technical skills required of trainees. 71 The OpComp form was shown to have good construct validity, and trainers found it simple to complete. 68 Although an advance, there were aspects of this method that undermined its reliability.…”
