Constant Bottomhole Pressure: Managed-Pressure Drilling Technique Applied in an Exploratory Well in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: The proposed well is an exploratory well where the formation pressures were estimated based on the experience in drilling offset wells in the area. The 8 3/8" and 5 7/8" hole sections, have a wide range of predicted pore pressure, indicating a considerable span of uncertainty in addition to other related conventional drilling problems as tight hole and gas influx. In previous wells drilled in the area, many drilling problems and wellbore stability issues were experienced. One of the possible cuases of the mech… Show more

“…5. MPD Equipment Layout [13] b. MPD impact value MPD is a basic explanation of the approaches for wellbore pressure management, which covers a variety of concepts describing procedures and equipment created to reduce well kicks, lost circulation, and differential sticking. A beneficial drilling method is one that addresses a real-world issue in a cost-effective way while having little influence on the other components of the drilling operation.…”

“…Because of the misunderstandings of the objective situation or the errors in decision-making of the subjective consciousness, it may cause plenty of complex situations and serious disaster. The blowout accident is one of the most common and heavy loss safety accidents [2]. Overflow is the precursor of blowout, which is caused by the unbalance formation pressure of the bottom hole during the drilling process.…”
