Research on Overflow Monitoring Mechanism Based on Downhole Microflow Detection

Abstract: The flow rate variation of the drilling fluid and micro-overflow loss is difficult to analyze. The purpose to prevent the occurrence of kick, lost circulation, and other complex conditions is not easy to be achieved. Therefore, the microflow-induced annulus multiphase flow rate and annulus pressure field model were studied, and a downhole microflow measurement system has been developed. A differential pressure type flow measurement was used in the system, and real-time downhole information was obtained to achi… Show more

“…When people design the string, in order to increase the effective flow area of drilling fluid in the drill pipe, flat copper wire is used as the cable in the drill pipe and special insulating material is used to wrap the wire into a "sandwich", then put it into the pipe bore [10]. The wire section is shown in Figure 1.…”

“…Aiming at the special downhole environment in oil and gas while drilling, the limitation of borehole space to measurement system size, as well as the effect of downhole pressure, temperature, multiphased fluids containing oil and gas bubbles and solid particles plus the variations of downhole fluid domain on measurement, instrument measurement accuracy, and response characteristics, needs comprehensive consideration. In the literature, the researchers proposed different methods and solutions such as acoustics [2][3][4], pressure difference [5,6], and electromagnetics [7,8] for the downhole annular flow measurement while drilling. These methods have achieved some successes but have some problems.…”

“…J. Wei et al investigated the subsea ultrasonic annular flow measuring system using the principal of time difference and Doppler, and completed some relevant experiments in 2011 [6].However, this kind of annular flow measuring system cannot measure non-Newtonian fluids with large numbers of solid particles. P. Chen developed a downhole annular flow measuring system based on a differential pressure type flow measurement in 2012, and completed a downhole site test [7][8].A downhole differential pressure annular flow measuring system can be widely applied, and as it is almost completely insensitive to fluid properties it can be used in two-phase or multiphase flow. However, due to the chock part in measuring system, it will cause pressure loss and blocking problems in the chock part.…”
