Device-to-device (D2D) communication is an essential part of the future fifth generation (5G) system that can be seen as a "network of networks," consisting of multiple seamlessly-integrated radio access technologies (RATs). Public safety communications, autonomous driving, socially-aware networking, and infotainment services are example use cases of D2D technology. High data rate communications and use of several active air interfaces in the described network create energy consumption challenges for both base stations and the end user devices. In this paper, we review the status of 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standardization, which is the most important standardization body for 5G systems. We define a set of application scenarios for D2D communications in 5G networks. We use the recent models of 3GPP long term evolution (LTE) and WiFi interfaces in analyzing the power consumption from both the infrastructure and user device perspectives. The results indicate that with the latest radio interfaces, the best option for energy saving is the minimization of active interfaces and sending the data with the best possible data rate. Multiple recommendations on how to exploit the results in future networks are given.

SUMMARY DVB-S2X is the cornerstone for satellite communication standards forming the state-of-the-art of broadband satellite waveforms. In this paper we propose new application scenarios and advanced techniques, including a reference design implementing superframing, predistortion, a robust synchronization chain, and a plugand-play channel interleaver. We demonstrate by means of software simulations and hardware tests that the DVB-S2X can be a common technology enabler for land-mobile, aeronautical, and maritime satellite scenarios in addition to the more traditional VSAT scenario, even in very challenging conditions (e.g., very low SNR).

Autonomous ships are in experimental stage nowadays with Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) already defi ned by IMO. Since MASS rely heavily on communications, security of communication systems and data security is critical. Secure communication is required to avoid bad actors to interfere with the communications or seizing control of a autonomous ship. In this paper, implementation of blockchain technology to improve autonomous vessels control security is investigated. This technology is already used in maritime bill of lading, acts on ship's technical inspection and for more accurate container tracking etc. The paper is organized as follows: fi rst section describes current status on autonomous ships, basic defi nitions and terms, second section describes what is blockchain technology and how does it work, third section deals with blockchain technology applications with the proposed usage of the technology in autonomous vessels control scheme.
