Summary Communication systems are adopting all‐software architectures, because of their scalability, extensibility, flexibility, and cost‐effectiveness. This paper introduces a concurrent approach to the development and verification of baseband systems for satellite ground operations based on the behaviour‐driven development methodology. The open‐source GNU Radio development kit is used for developing the software‐defined radio baseband signal processing, as well as simulating the satellite and realistic channel impairments. The system performance at the end shows deviations of less than 1 dB with respect to the ideal performance and the Green Book standards specified by the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems.

Summary The number of satellites has been increasing in both geostationary (GEO) and non‐geostationary (NGEO) earth orbits. Due to the limited availability of spectrum resources, the interference risk among these satellite networks has been increasing consequently. In such a scenario, the protection of existent GEO transmissions is crucial. In this paper, the co‐existence downlink interference from a typical low earth orbit (LEO) constellation to earth stations of GEO satellites is examined for minimization of exclusion zone on the equatorial region. Two different operational scenario based on modulation and coding (MODCOD) with/without spread spectrum for the LEO system are considered. A multiobjective optimization problem (MOP) is formulated for nondominant solutions set based on exclusive angle minimization and bandwidth utilization of the LEO link. It is shown that the exclusive angle can be reduced up to 21.3% and 19.6%, compared with the initial anchor point at the transmission bit rates of 100 and 200 Mbps, respectively. The proposed optimal operational setting minimizes the interference risk to the GEO satellite network as well as maintains quality of service (QoS) for the LEO communication network. The results provide optimal operational mode selection for LEO satellite operators and/or decision makers.

In this paper, we present a new hardware test-bed to demonstrate closed-loop precoded communications for interference mitigation in multi-beam ultra high throughput satellite systems under realistic payload and channel impairments. We build the test-bed to demonstrate a real-time channel aided precoded transmission under realistic conditions such as the power constraints and satellitepayload non-linearities. We develop a scalable architecture of an SDR platform with the DVB-S2X piloting. The SDR platform consists of two parts: analog-to-digital (ADC) and digital-to-analog (DAC) converters preceded by radio frequency (RF) front end and Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) backend. The former introduces realistic impairments in the transmission chain such as carrier frequency and phase misalignments, quantization noise of multichannel ADC and DAC and non-linearities of RF components. It allows evaluating the performance of the precoded transmission in a more realistic environment rather than using only numerical simulations. We benchmark the performance of the communication standard in realistic channel scenarios, evaluate received signal SNR, and measure the actual channel throughput using LDPC codes.
