Co-creation has received increasing interest as a way of develop products and services in collaboration with customers and clients. Recently, co-creation has been introduced in higher education; however, there is no general agreement about what this entails, and while the concept of co-creation has been used in a number of differing contexts, descriptions tend to focus on potentials only and not the tensions inherent in this kind of collaboration. In this paper we describe a conceptual model for co-creation with students and explore the potentials as well as the tensions inherent in co-creation with students at academic libraries. Through a case study at The Royal Danish Library, Aarhus University Library we develop a conceptual model for co-creation with students that identifies the key aspects of co-creation with students and indicates its key potentials and tensions.

El objetivo del estudio es identificar cómo la GC (gestión del conocimiento) puede contribuir al proceso de cocreación de valor en los servicios de información. La investigación está justificada, puesto que la GC ofrece numerosas ventajas en las bibliotecas con el propósito de cambiar drásticamente sus necesidades y capacidades en la provisión de servicios de información. La metodología de la matriz cualitativa y constructivista utilizó el proceso de desarrollo del conocimiento - instrumento constructivista (ProKnow-C) para la selección de literatura, identificación / análisis y formación de un portafolio bibliográfico (PB). El análisis se basa en Vargo y Lusch (2004), con respecto a la GC y sus procesos de intercambio de conocimiento (recursos operativos, dinámicas, competencias, aprendizaje y cocreación de valor). Desde la perspectiva de los servicios de información, resultó en la discusión de recursos operativos (información y conocimiento) y su gestión, el proceso de intercambio (aprendizaje organizacional), las habilidades de los profesionales y el valor caracterizado en este nuevo contexto (cocreación). Se concluye que la GC puede ofrecer herramientas para mejorar los serviciosde información, y no sólo agregar valor, sino más bien crearlo conjuntamente, de modo que tanto los usuarios como la organización se beneficien en este contexto.

Knowledge management and innovation: Two explicit intentions pursued by Spanish university libraries

This article analyses the content of three types of institutional statements (mission, vision and values) published on Spanish university libraries’ websites. The aim is to determine whether they express explicit support for knowledge management and innovation in the university. The analysis revealed that 75% of the population (n = 76) published at least one such statement. The most widely published of the three types was the mission statement, 37 of which contained the terms ‘knowledge’ or ‘innovation’, particularly the former, present in 33. The vision statements of 17 libraries alluded to both, in practically the same proportion. ‘Innovation’ appeared in 20 of 28 libraries with statements of values, denoting the high esteem in which that conceit is held by university librarians. These statements stand as proof that libraries regard innovation and some stage of knowledge management as primary aims, with the furtherance of knowledge creation/generation the one most frequently cited.
