Computerized tomographic study of normal Evans index in adult Nigerians

Abstract: Background:The evaluation of degree of ventricular enlargement should be based on established indices rather than on personal experience as this is highly subjective. Our aim was to establish normal values for Evans index in a Nigerian adult population as none has been found in the Nigerian medical literature.Materials and Methods:Axial computerized tomographic brain scans of 488 normal subjects were reviewed retrospectively. Of them, 319 (65.36%) of the patients were males and 169 (34.63%) were females; their… Show more

“…It is the ratio which compares the maximum width of the frontal horns of lateral ventricles to the maximum transverse diameter of inner table of the skull at the same level. 3 For the diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), follow-up cases of ventriculoperitoneal shunt 4 , alcoholism, dementia, this index is an important parameter. Thus developing a baseline reference data of Evan's index will be useful in a wide range of clinical conditions for this population where such data is unavailable.…”

“…Being a record-base study, patient consent was not required however; this research was approved by the ethics committee Nepal medical college and Teaching Hospital and permission was obtained from the hospital authorities. Based on the study of Hamidu et al 14 Evan's Index at 95% confidential level taking standard deviation of 3 mm and margin of error of 0.27mm, the sample size was calculated as 500 using the formula n=Z 2 σ 2 /d 2 Being a retrospective study, patient consent was not required however; this research was approved by the ethics committee Nepal medical college and Teaching Hospital. Scan reports of 500 individuals that were reported excluding abnormality in CT brain were reviewed independently by investigators alongside their images with taking help when needed by radiology expert.…”
