Normative Parameters of Evans Index using Computerized Tomographic Scan in Individuals of Kashmiri Ethnicit

Abstract: Introduction: Knowledge of the ventricular size is important for the initial and precise diagnosis of hydrocephalus. Evans index is a valuable parameter in diagnosis of the NPH, follow up cases of VP shunt, dementia and many other pathologies. Therefore, having a baseline reference data of the Evan's index will be helpful in a wide range of clinical pathologies. Our aim was to establish normal values for Evans index in a Kashmiri indian population as none has been found in the Kashmiri medical literature. Mate… Show more

“…Additionally, this value based on international guidelines. Evans index (EI) is also a valid estimated index in posttraumatic ventriculomegaly (Jehangir et al, 2018). EI is related with some conditions such as normal ageing, neurodegenarative diseases, tumors, trauma, and some hydrocephalus types, alcoholism, dementia, cerebral atrophy, multiple sclerosis.…”

“…But, brain atrophy maybe compensated by increase in the ventricle size, although the EI does not surpass 0.3 (Moore et al, 2012;Kanakaraj et al;Arun Kumar et al, 2017a). We determined this index that maximum width between the frontal horns of the lateral ventricles divided by the maximum transverse inner diameter of the skull as noted in literature data (Karakas et al;Moore et al;Reddy et al, 2015;Patnaik et al;Arun Kumar et al, 2017a;Jehangir et al). In normal subjects or over the age of 60, EI is equal to or less than 0.29 (LeMay, 1984).The Evans ratio was found as 0.25 in Turkish females and males (Karakas et al).…”

“…Obstructive hydrocephalus also presents in 70% of tumors located in the pineal region [3]. Patients can be either symptomatic, have symptoms related to the primary tumor, or have hydrocephalusrelated symptoms [1]. Generally, symptomatic patients are candidates for VP shunt placement to reduce acute symptoms.…”

“…Hydrocephalus is a build-up of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain and is characterized by abnormal dilatation of the cerebral ventricles. The CSF accumulation may be due to obstruction in the normal flow or an imbalance in production and absorption [ 1 ]. The obstruction most commonly occurs at the foramen of Monro, the aqueduct of Sylvius, the fourth ventricle, and the foramen magnum; most tumors with a significant size or that produce a mass effect by edema can impede circulation at any point of CSF pathways causing obstructive hydrocephalus [ 2 ].…”

“…3 Ventricular enlargement caused due to imbalance in the production and absorption of cerebrospinal fluid is referred as hydrocephalus. 4,5 Cerebal ventricular enlargement is one of the characteristic in cerebral disorders associated with neurologic and psychiatric involvements. It has been demonstrated as encephalographic abnormality both in children and adults.…”
