Complications of foldable intraocular lenses requiring explantation or secondary intervention—2007 survey update

Abstract: The tenth annual survey of complications associated with foldable intraocular lenses (IOLs) requiring explantation or secondary intervention was sent to members of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. Preoperative data about visual acuity, patient signs and symptoms, and complications requiring IOL removal were evaluated. Complications were then tabulated for each of the following major foldable IOL groups: 1-piece (plate) silicon… Show more

“…1 Even with modern biometry methods, refractive surprises due to incorrect IOL power calculations still occur, on the order of 45% of cases in one large series. 2 Management of refractive errors after cataract operations includes spectacles or contact lens, secondary laser vision correction, IOL exchange, or piggyback lens implantation.…”

“…No case of IOL opacification has been reported in patients with this lens in articles published in scientific journals indexed in PubMed and SciELO (keywords searched: Ioflex, lens opacification, lens calcification). Although few hydrophilic acrylic IOL designs are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be used in the United States (2) , they are largely commercialized in other countries.…”
