Comparison of triamcinolone acetonide mucoadhesive film with licorice mucoadhesive film on radiotherapy‐induced oral mucositis: A randomized double‐blinded clinical trial

Abstract: We concluded that both triamcinolone and licorice mucoadhesive films are effective in the management of oral mucositis during radiotherapy. Furthermore, comparison of the pain scores between two groups demonstrated no meaningful difference, although an overall trend to reduced oral discomfort was seen in the licorice group.

“…Triamcinolone is commonly used in clinical dentistry because of its analgesic effects on oral ulcers. It has a potent anti-inflammatory effect and is effective in reducing oral scores of mucositis and pain in patients undertaking radiotherapy 12 . But corticoids used in treatment of inflammatory conditions not only inhibit the symptoms of acute inflammation but also retard wound healing 1 , 12 .…”

“…The formation of mucosal ulcers is an end result of epithelial damage, and it occurs due to some specific causes, such as trauma, aphthous stomatitis, lichen planus and lichenoid reactions, cytotoxic effects of chemotherapy and radiation, and drug-induced hypersensitivity reactions and malignant settings [1,2].…”

“…However, until the present moment, the precise role of the cytokines has not been clearly defined [5]. This process results in the development of erythematous, atrophic, and ulcerative lesions as a consequence of epithelial damage and death mediated through a complex series of molecular and cellular events that impede the quality of life of individuals with buccal mucositis [2,4,6].…”
