Comparison of the nutritional status of pregnant adolescents with adult pregnant women. III. Maternal protein and calorie intake and weight gain in relation to size of infant at birth

Abstract: Factors influencing the outcome of pregnancy were studied in 98 women, ages 12 to 32, divied into four age groups. A significantly higher weight gain was recorded for the youngest age group and the lowest gain for the oldest age group. The amount of weight gained was a function of length of gestation, but was not influenced by calorie intake of the mother. Neither was there significant correlation between protein and calorie intake of the mother and the infant's birth weight. Mean calorie intakes averaged belo… Show more

“…We did not find any significant correlation between head circumference of the newborn and calcium/vitamin D intake of the mother, in agreement with previous results [36]. Our mothers with pre-pregnancy BMI 526 kg/m 2 had more weight gain during pregnancy, similar to previous reports [34]. Moreover, mothers with adequate vitamin D and calcium intake had greater weight gain, a finding again confirmed elsewhere [17,20,37].…”

“…Kekurangan energi kronis banyak dialami dan terjadi pada perempuan atau yang biasa disebut wanita usia subur (WUS) dengan usia 15-45 tanun dan hal ini berlanjut sampai masa kehamilan. Besarnya pertambahan berat badan merupakan fungsi dari lamanya masa gestasi tetapi tidak dipengaruhi oleh asupan kalori ibu (Ancri, G. Morse, E H. Clarke, 1977).…”

“…In the study by Thomson (19S9), the relation between infant birthweight and energy intake practically disappeared ( r = 0-05) when maternal body weight at week 2U was taken into account. In other studies no significant relation was found between infant birthweight and cnergy intake (Beal 1971;Ancri et al 1977).…”
