Comparative Study Regarding Leather Biodegradability

Abstract: ABSTRACT. This paper presents a comparative study regarding the biodegradability of three types of organic tanned leathers: vegetable tanned leather, leather tanned with oxazolidine and leather tanned with resorcinol -oxazolidine, and three types of leather tanned with inorganic tanning agents: based on Chromium (III), based on Ti-Al, based on Ti-Zr. For assessment of leather biodegradation, EN ISO 20200:2005 was used as method. Physical-chemical analyses were performed on leathers at day zero and after 90, 12… Show more

“…Reference samples of vegetable-tanned leathers contained less than 2.1% of sulphated total ash, whereas in the case of reference chrome-tanned leathers it varied from 5.2% to 6.4% (Table S2 in the supporting information), which is in agreement with the literature (Blažej, 1984;Constantinescu et al, 2015).…”

“…A higher content of ash is usually observed when inorganic salts (e.g., chromium salts) are used for the tanning process. Chrome and other mineral‐tanned leathers contain 3–12% of sulphated total ash (Blažej, 1984; Constantinescu et al, 2015; Kubelka, 1946). With regard to archaeological leathers from a soil environment, we suppose that the sulphated total ash content can be enhanced due to the sorption of inorganic components from the soil.…”
