Communicating uncertainty in the IPCC’s greenhouse gas emissions scenarios

Abstract: The issue of climate change required the development of the Special Report on Emission Scenarios (SRES) by the IPCC. The complexity of the subject and the unique science-policy relation resulted in confusion and discussions appeared in popular media like The Economist. This paper reviews scenario literature and SRES, identifies the most vulnerable elements in the communication of SRES. In the communication of GHG emission scenarios through SRES, the weaknesses that have been identified by the authors of this p… Show more

“…Clearly, the way uncertainty is handled and the suitability of assigning subjective probabilities to scenarios is a matter of lively debate and an important, but unresolved challenge in the application of climate scenarios (Dessai et al, 2007;Groves and Lempert, 2007;Schenk and Lensink, 2007;van Vuuren et al, 2008;Lemos and Rood, 2010).…”

“…The science of climate change is so complex that considerable time and education efforts are needed for its adoption (e.g. Kellstedt et al, 2008;IPCC, 2007a;Schenk and Lensink, 2007). Not only is the science complex, but physical climatic events are highly uncertain, difficult to predict and appear often as specific and isolated events.…”

“…The IPCC emission scenarios have been criticized for its inability to assign probabilities to the projections (Schneider, 2001;. Additional discussion on the communicative issues and uncertainties within SRES can be found in Schenk and Lensink (2007).…”
