This study explores the usage of commissive speech acts in the women-centric movies "Little Women" and "Enola Holmes." It employs Searle's classification of speech acts (1979), along with Hymes' social structure theory (2001) and Brown Levinson's politeness theory (1987). The analysis uncovers various types of commissive speech acts in movies set in the nineteenth century. Furthermore, it reveals that the employment of commissive speech acts and the politeness strategies employed by the characters are significantly influenced by the social structure of their respective societies. These findings contribute novel insights to the existing theories and extend the scope of sociopragmatics research, particularly in evaluating movies within academic settings. The study suggests conducting further research encompassing diverse cases, exploring other aspects of speech act studies, and engaging in comparative or cross-cultural analyses.

Public speaking is not only about sharing information but also about pointing out the speakers’ intentions. There is the meaning should be understood by the hearers. This study discusses the illocutionary speech acts in the students’ public speaking in English Department. This study aims to determine the types of illocutionary speech acts in a formative speech in the sixth semester of the English language education study program at Pasir Pengaraian University. This study was descriptive qualitative. The sample of this research was the sixth-semester students of the English education study program at Pasir Pengarain University. The samples were taken by using the total sample. There were 22 students. The data of this study were obtained using the listening and note-taking technique design about the meaning of utterances containing. The data were analyzed by using Austin's Theory. The result showed three illocutionary speech acts: ten assertiveness, eight directive, four declarative, three commissives, and ten expressive.

Commissive speech acts focus to carry out the speaker toward particular action in the future. The speech of Donald Trump in campaign rally at Nevada has function to convey his vision and mission as candidate president in second time. This research purposes to find the types of commissive speech act and understand the functions of commissive speech act in Donald Trump’s speech campaign in Henderson, Nevada on 13 September 2020. The orientation in this research refer to utterance of Donald trump, The data source of this research take from video’s Fox Business in YouTube. This research used descriptive qualitative, with technique of collecting data are observation, watching and take note. The result of this research, there are 28 commissive speech acts in different functions. The result indicates 8 types commisive speech act by utterance of Donald Trump, there are promise, threaten, swear, guarantee, warrant, refuse, assure and vow.
