This article investigates the trends in using commissive speech in Sulha proceedings in Jordan. Sulha focuses on a dispute-resolution system in Arab society that uses the Bedouin Arabic dialect as the primary language of communication. Qualitative and quantitative research designs involving descriptive and survey instruments were used in this study. The data for the study were collected as audio recordings of some incidents taken from Sulha samples. Some of the data are from interviews with Sulha participants and the synthesis of archived disputes related to cases previously handled by Sulha. The data analysis was done according to the scope of Speech Act theory to show the trends adopted in the Sulha tribunals in making commitments by different participants in solving disputes. This study finds that the informal legal setting in the Sulha tribunals determines the patterns exhibited by commissive speech acts and their frequencies during the Sulha proceedings. A number of eight commissive speech acts are realised in the Sulha proceedings: promise, swear, vow, threat, guarantee, warning, acceptance, and offer. The eight commissive speech acts are realised either explicitly or implicitly. The results further reveal some of the commissive speech acts can elicit other commissives, and a number of commissives can also be resultant forces of other speech acts, such as the acts of directives. The finding of this study is expected to help understand how forms of language used in the Sulha enhance the adoption and discharge of commitment during the Sulha proceedings.

Penggunaan tindak tutur dalam proses belajar mengajar di kelas EFL telah menjadi topik yang menarik untuk dibahas. Hal ini disebabkan adanya perbedaan budaya antara bahasa asal dan bahasa sasaran. Oleh karena itu, tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk meninjau beberapa penelitian sebelumnya tentang tindak tutur yang paling dominan digunakan oleh guru di kelas EFL. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan dalam penulisan ini adalah penelitian kepustakaan. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian kepustakaan dengan menggunakan artikel dari beberapa penelitian sebelumnya untuk dianalisis. Sumber kepustakaan yang digunakan pada penelitian ini yaitu penelitian terdahulu, artikel, dan catatan. Dalam metode penelitian kepustakaan, setelah data terkumpul, data dianalisis dan akhirnya disimpulkan. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif dan analisis kuantitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tindak tutur yang paling dominan digunakan oleh guru di kelas EFL adalah direktif yang juga diindikasikan sebagai model kelas yang berpusat pada siswa. Dengan temuan tersebut kelas dapat dikategorikan sebagai student-centered karena guru secara aktif meminta siswa untuk melakukan sesuatu dengan memproduksi tindak tutur direktif.

This study focuses on Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's speech, the President of Indonesia from 2004 – 2014, who gave a speech about wire-tapping. This research project chooses this speech because, in recent days, wire-tapping, which Australia does, is famous. Moreover, the president at that time, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, was one of the wire-tapped victims. It was hot news for Indonesian at that time. On November 2013, SBY gave a speech about his action regarding this wiretapping. Thus, this paper analyzes the commissive speech act and its function. To explain the text clearly, a pragmatic analysis will be employed. This approach is used because the study intends to see the function of commissive speech acts beyond the text; therefore, some information will be scientifically proved regarding the act and its functions. This analysis is based on (Searle, 1969). The result of the study is expected to reveal the aforementioned intended information.
