Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Course in Persons Exposed to Ionizing Radiation as a Result of the Chornobyl Accident

Abstract: Objective. Describe and characterize the peculiarities of the chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) course and response to treatment in patients irradiated as a result of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant (ChNPP) accident based on the assessment of clinical-laboratory and clinical parameters. Materials and methods. The CML patients (n = 33) exposed to ionizing radiation as a result of the ChNPP accident were enrolled. The comparison group consisted of CML patients (n = 725) with no history of radiation exposure. All … Show more

“…Furthermore, scattered article reported some risk factors related to CML's morbidity and mortality, such as exposure to high-level ionizing radiation, chemotherapy, and genetic abnormalities. 1,[13][14][15] But systematic analysis is lacking. In our study, we analyzed the changing trend of incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of CML from 1990 to 2019 on the basis of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk factor Study 2019 (GBD 2019), which provides a systematic scientific assessment of published, publicly available, and contributed data on incidence, prevalence, mortality, and DALYs because of 369 diseases and injuries, for two sexes, and 204 countries and territories.…”

“…The risk factors contributing to CML range from lifestyle choices to environmental exposures, including smoking, being overweight, exposure to certain chemicals, and chemotherapy. [8][9][10][11] Understanding these risks can help in early detection and better management.…”
