Chitosan Nanoparticles as a Carrier for Mentha longifolia Extract:Synthesis, Characterization and Antifungal Activity

Abstract: A recent study was aimed at determining the antifungal activity of chitosan in both its natural and nanopa rticle forms. The present study reports on the prepa ration and characterization of ch itosan nanop articles and chitosan nanoparticle-incorporated Mentha longifolia. The size of the chitosan nanoparticles was 157 nm, and the mint extraction nanoparticles at concen trat ions of 5%, 10% and 20% were 142, 105 and 63 nm respectively. The surfaces of the chi tosan nanoparticles had a positive charge of approx… Show more

“…According to the results of FTIR analysis, the 3200 cm -1 peak of OH and NH bonds in chitosan shifted to 3200-3600 cm -1 in NPDP nanoparticles. This result indicated that hydrogen bonding is enhanced due to hydrostatic interaction between amino groups and phosphoric groups in TPP (Agarwal et al, 2018;El Aziz et al, 2018). The 1655 cm -1 peak of amide bending vibrations of chitosan shifted to 1693 cm -1 .…”

“…(Da Silva et al, 2015). This was due to the aggregation caused by heavy inter-and intra-molecular bonding of hydrogen that could not be stopped even with the homogenization of the vortex (El Aziz et al, 2018).…”

“…In the case of Propionibacterium acnes, these changes were also beneficial. Data indicates the synergism of bactericidal activity of chitosan and the Calendulae flos lyophilized extract against the anaerobic pathogen, which often infects the skin [78,79]. In the last stage of the work, optimization of obtaining a topical pharmaceutical form containing the Calendulae flos lyophilized extract with chitosan 80/500 1:1 (w/w) and 80/1000 1:1 (w/w) was carried out to obtain appropriate adhesive properties for the supporting strategy for wound healing applications.…”

“…The sample with highest antibacterial and biofilm inhibitory activities was selected for evaluation its effectiveness in a chitosan based nanoformulation. Blank chitosan nanoparticles and chitosan nanoparticles loaded with the plant sample were prepared by ionic gelation method as described earlier [42]. Summarily, a 1 mg ml −1 sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) (Sigma-Aldrich Co.) solution was prepared in distilled water.…”
