The present study presents the seasonal hydrography and currents of the Brazilian Northeast Continental Shelf. The study area is located on the Brazilian tropical coast of the Atlantic Ocean between 7.5 and 9 °S. This continental shelf is narrow (~35 km wide) and shallow, with shelf break lying at a depth of 60 m. Salinity and temperature data were collected monthly by means of hydrographic surveys, conducted across the shelf in a single transect in the central part of the study area, between March 2012 and May 2013. Two further campaigns were also conducted to characterize the winter (August 2013) and the summer (January 2014), covering the whole study area (4,600 km 2 ). Water level and currents were measured using an array of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) moored at mid-shelf in the central area. Seasonal temperature ranged from 26 °C in September to 29.5 °C in April, with a 2-month lag between the minimum and maximum air temperatures. Salinity did not present a clear seasonal pattern, fluctuating between 36.5 and 37.0 psu throughout the year. The mean temperature and salinity values obtained in the winter and summer campaigns were 26.5 and 27.6 °C and 37.1 and 36.7 psu, respectively. Tropical Water (TW) was predominant, accounting for 95% to 97%, with presence of Coastal Water (CW) limited to the inner part of the shelf. The mean flow velocity values in the water column in winter and summer were 0.11 and 0.06 m/s, respectively, similarly to the seasonal wind regime. Northward currents were observed predominantly in winter, with a short period of inverted southward current. These episodes were related to periods of wind relaxation and presented periodicity of 6-13 days, observed through wavelet analysis. This periodicity may be associated with atmospheric instabilities at higher latitudes. Summer currents were sluggish, when the tides accounted for 75 and 43% of the variance in the cross-and along-shelf current components, respectively. TW is the main water mass in the Pernambuco Continental Shelf (PCS) in summer and winter. Current intensity is weak and without direction in summer and stronger towards the north in winter.Keywords: Water masses; Circulation; Brazilian Northeast Shelf. An updated and reviewed checklist of coastal fishes of the Rio Grande do Norte state, northeastern coast of Brazil, is presented. Between 2003 and 2013 the occurrence of fish species were recorded through collection of specimens, landing records of the artisanal fleet, literature reviews and from specimens deposited in ichthyological collections. A total of 459 species from 2 classes, 26 orders, 102 families and 264 genera is listed, with 83 species (18% of the total number) recorded for the first time in the study area. Additionally, Halichoeres radiatus, Lachnolaimus maximus and Canthigaster james tyleri are reported for the first time in the Brazilian coast and nine other species have their geographic distribution extended.

-(New records of red seaweeds to the coast of Ceará State, Northeastern Brazil). A recent fl oristic survey of Rhodophyta from Ceará State,, revealed the occurrence of 113 species distributed into 14 orders, 28 families and 63 genera. Of these, 18 species belonging to seven orders are new records; some of them poorly described and illustrated in the literature or cited only checklists. Therefore, aiming to expand the taxonomic knowledge about these poorly known species, we present detailed descriptions, illustrations, and comments on related taxa. The occurrence of Ceratodictyon scoparium is confi rmed for the South Atlantic coast. The male gametophytes of Dohrniella antillarum var. brasiliensis and tetrasporophytes of Gracilariopsis silvana are illustrated for the fi rst time. Ceramium fujianum is a new addition to northeastern Brazil. Among the new records, Callithamnion corymbosum, Ceramium clarionense, C. fujianum and C. scoparium showed a signifi cant expansion of their geographic distribution along the Brazilian coast. Most of the newly recorded species are fi lamentous, small-sized or tufted algae, highlighting the need for new collections to detect the presence of these components. Um recente levantamento fl orístico de Rhodophyta do Estado do Ceará (02º46'30''-07º52'15''S, 37º14'54''-41º24'45''W), Brasil, revelou a ocorrência de 113 espécies distribuídas em 14 ordens, 28 famílias e 63 gêneros. Dentre esses, 18 espécies pertencentes a sete ordens são novos registros, algumas pobremente descritas e ilustradas na literatura ou somente citadas em listas. Com o objetivo de expandir o conhecimento taxonômico acerca dessas espécies, são apresentadas descrições detalhadas, ilustrações e comparações com táxons relacionados. A ocorrência de Ceratodictyon scoparium é confi rmada na costa do Atlântico Sul. Os gametófi tos masculinos de Dohrniella antillarum var. brasiliensis e tetrasporófi tos de Gracilariopsis silvana são ilustrados pela primeira vez. Ceramium fujianum é um novo registro para a costa nordeste do Brasil. Dentre as novas ocorrências, Callithamnion corymbosum, Ceramium clarionense, C. fujianum and C. scoparium mostraram uma expansão signifi cativa da distribuição geográfi ca ao longo do litoral brasileiro. A maioria das espécies é fi lamentosa, diminutas ou formam tufos, demonstrando a necessidade de novas coletas para detectar a presença desses componentes.
