Characterization of the Brazilian continental shelf adjacent to Rio Grande do Norte state, NE Brazil

Abstract: A B S T R A C TThis study focuses on the analysis of high-resolution seismic profiles, integrated with sedimentological, echosounder, SRTM and satellite image datasets, of the Brazilian continental shelf adjacent to the Rio Grande do Norte State, NE Brazil. Located in the northeast of Brazil, the State of Rio Grande do Norte is bounded by two main coastal and shelf systems: the eastern coastal-shelf, from the Sagi River to the Touros High, and the northern coastal-shelf, extending from Touros High to Tibau. “…Based on these data, the power spectra, the energy coherence by wavelet analysis, and the phase spectrum were calculated following the procedures described in Torrence and Compo (1998) and Grinsted, Moore and Jevrejeva (2004); the coherence of energy between them was also analyzed.…”

“…In general, the Brazilian Northeast Continental Shelf presents average width of approximately 40 km and shelf break lyimg at depths between 50 and 60 m (VITAL et al, 2010). Temperature (27 °C) and salinity (>36) are high in most of the shelf, except in its the inner portion and in the vicinity of the mouth of the Sao Francisco (Sergipe and Alagoas states) and Parnaiba (Piaui state) Rivers.…”

“…Coastal fishes are here defined as fishes that inhabit from estuaries to the continental shelf break. On the northern coast, the continental shelf extends for 40-45 km from the beach line and breaks around 40-50 m depth (Amaro and Ferreira 2012), while on the eastern coast, it extends for 14-30 km and breaks in 50-60 m depth (Vital et al 2010). Species occurrences in the RN are listed at coast level (records at northern coast and/or eastern coast) and the fish common name used by local fishermen is presented when existing.…”

“…This northeastern region is unique by the occurrence of oligotrophic waters and abundance of substrata, enabling the development of rich marine flora (Horta et al 2001). The coastline is under the influence of highly energetic waves, subhumid climate, high temperatures throughout the year (~26 °C), strong winds and an intense flux of resuspended sediments, despite the lack of fluvial inputs (Testa & Bosence 1998, Knoppers et al 1999, Vital et al 2008, Vital et al 2010.…”
