Show more
“…The location in eyelids, third eyelid and conjunctiva confirms data reported in the literature 1,2 , and they suggest still, that in these cases in which the injury restricts to the tissue superficial plans and it was diagnosed the early stages of cancer eye normally therapy is favorable 16 .…”
A six-year old Holstein cow with an eye cancer (ocular squamous cell carcinoma) involving the third eyelid and conjunctiva was submitted to photodynamic therapy using intratumoral 20% aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA -Aldrich Chemical Company, Milwaukee, USA) and a light emitting diode (LED -VET LED -MMOptics®) with wavelength between 600 and 700 nm, 2 cm diameter circular light beam, power of 150 mW, light dose of 50 J/cm 2 as a source of irradiation. Fifteen days after the experimental procedure we observed about 50% tumor reduction and complete remission after 3 months. Relapse was not observed up to 12 months after the treatment. Although the study only includes one animal not allowing definite conclusions, it indicates that PDT represents a safe and technically feasible approach in the treatment of eye cancer in cattle.

SummaryFarjanikish, G., 2017. Perineal squamous cell carcinoma in a goat: A case report. Bulg. J. Vet. Med., 20, No 3,[281][282][283][284][285][286] A 4.5-year old female native Iranian goat was presented with history of an irregularly shaped and cauliflower-like non ulcerated mass that affected the perineum which gradually increased in size. The tumour covered the entire orifice of the anus and extended to the dorsal aspect of the vulva. The mass were excised from the base. On cut-section, reddish white fleshy soft surface with 4×3.5×1 cm dimensions was observed. The enlarging tissue appeared 3 months earlier to presentation as a small neoplastic tissue. The peripheral lymph nodes were normal. There was no evidence of another cutaneous lesion or of metastasis to other organs. Histopathological examination revealed a welldifferentiated squamous cell carcinoma displaying central pearls of keratin and a dense fibrous stroma. The tumour cell was large and had an abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm with slightly enlarged hyperchromatic nuclei. They will often produce large amounts of keratin, resulting in the formation of extracellular keratin pearls. Tumour cells showed hyperchromatism and mitotic figure in some areas. Based on histopathological characteristics the tumour was diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma.
Exposed, the case of a bull pure Simmental breed, age 9, with the presence of skin lesions, consistent with squamous level eye and nose cells. It is performed clinical evaluation and pathological characterization of skin lesions, these being exophytic granulomatous appearance with erythema, edema, scaling with crusting, firm and presence of exudation Serosanguinous. Subsequently, after sedation and application of local anesthesia it was taken biopsy tissue from the periphery of the cancerous lesion punch of 6 mm subsequently fixed in 10% formalin and taken to the Laboratory of Pathology of the Department of Animal Science, University of Cordoba, Colombia, where they were processed until paraffin embedding. Finally, the sample was stained with hematoxylin - eosin (HE), where the presence of islands with central core surrounded keratin tumor cells was confirmed and branching cords of neoplastic epithelial cells with varying degrees of squamous differentiation and high presence of mitosis. The final diagnosis was well-differentiated squamous carcinoma cells.
