The nature of the plasticizer plays a pivotal role in the analytical performance of polymer membrane ion sensors. Conventional plasticizers suffer leaching or migration from the membrane and exudation, both of which could limit the lifetime of sensors based on plasticized membranes. Herein, we describe the use of polyester sebacate (PES), a model polymeric plasticizer, in the preparation of poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) using valinomycin as ionophore. PVC membrane electrodes plasticized with polyester sebacate demonstrated potentiometric response characteristics that compared favorably to ones plasticized with the conventional and similarly structured plasticizer bis(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate (DOS). Increasing the content of polyester sebacate in the membrane enhanced the response and improved the selectivity of valinomycin-based ISEs toward potassium over sodium. Various methods, including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, dark field optical microscopy, and potentiometry were employed to study the effect of plasticizer on the leaching of the membrane components and the lifetime of both DOS- and PES-plasticized membranes. PES-plasticized electrodes maintained Nernstian response and high selectivity for more than four months, an improvement over DOS-plasticized membrane electrodes. This was attributed to enhanced retention of the membrane components because of the high polymeric nature of the polyester sebacate. These characteristics suggest that polyester sebacate is a good candidate to replace the conventional plasticizers in preparing PVC membrane electrodes with longer lifetime.

A rat model is introduced which enables investigations in anticoagulated blood with continuous measurements by a flow-through electrode system. In the present study, a potentiometric ion-selective electrode (ISE)-system was used for measuring Ca2+, K+, Na+ and pH in rats. The setup was adjusted to an extracorporeal blood-volume of 0.750 ml. This permits indirect measurements of the analytes via a dialysis membrane, with electrical separation of the ISE's and the animal. The flow-rates of blood and dialysis-solution were adjusted in such a way that water diffusing from the aqueous dialysis solution into the blood, across the dialysis membrane, does not alter the haematocrit. Polyethyleneglycol-hirudin was used for anticoagulation, since it was superior to heparin. The assembly enables continuous measurements in the living anaesthetized rat over a time period of at least 3 hours.

Biosensors Based on Catalase Membranes with Utilization of Enzymatic Bifunctionality for Molecular‐selective Carrier‐Analysis of Ethanol A robust bioelectrochemical measuring system for amperometric electroanalysis of ethanol is presented, which allows measurements between 0.01 and 99.8 vol.% of ethanol without preceeding dilution. It is distinguished by long‐lived biosensors based on bifunctional catalase membranes. Besides the O2‐sensitive enzymatic biosensor the design includes components for intermediate carrier analysis such as a microdialysator for analyte uptake into buffered, H2O2 containing carrier solution out of the sample solution both with tangential countercurrent fluxes, an oxigenating pump for constant pO2 in the carrier stream, a pressure adjusting chamber as protection from variing pressure on the enzyme membrane resulting from the roller pump's pulsations. Utilization of the membrane's catalatic and peroxidatic bifunctionality is the basis of ethanol analysis: peroxidatically acting catalase molecules cannot release oxygen by catalatic reaction of H2O2 at the same time.
