The possibility of recovering one of the famous heavy metal ions, divalent copper, from contaminated aqueous solutions (which simulates wastewater) was studied in this study. The removal method was adsorption technique using a laboratory batch-mode unit, while the used tea leaves were the adsorption media. The adsorption process was performed under various operating conditions and ranges that simulate the natural environmental conditions to determine the ideal values that achieve the maximum removal of copper ions. The acquired results demonstrated that the maximum remediation efficiency was 85%, which was achieved at treatment time, shaking speed, initial concentration, temperature, acid function, and adsorption dose of 90 min, 250 rpm, 70 ppm, 25°C, 4, 4.5 g, respectively. The values of the thermodynamic properties demonstrated that adsorption is spontaneous, exothermic and has negative entropy, while adsorption follows Langmuir’s model and the second pseudo-model according to the isotherm and kinetic studies, respectively. To conduct the Zero Residues Level concept, the loaded used tea leaves were prepared to study it effect as a simple type of rodenticide by applying it to Sprague Dawley rats. The results of the test show that the effectiveness of utilizing the residues as rodenticide and the LD50 of the proposed rodenticide were identical to those mentioned in the literature. Based on these results, the current study sheds light on the possibility of converting used tea leaves from harmful solid waste to an environmentally friendly substance using it as an effective adsorbent medium for the treatment of water polluted with heavy metals.

The increasing global population and the rapid industrial development associated therewith have increased the demand for fossil-derived fuel oils. The sources of fossil fuels are limited, and many studies have been being conducted to find alternative fuel sources. Waste tire pyrolysis oil (WTPO) attracts considerable attention as an alternative fuel because its properties are similar to those of diesel oil. However, WTPO has a high sulfur content of >1.0 wt%, which is above the environmental standard limit of 0.1 wt%; therefore, it cannot be used in engines directly. It is thus highly necessary to remove sulfur compounds from tire-derived oils. However, finding an appropriate and environmentally friendly process is proving difficult. This review article presents the various desulfurization methods used to removal sulfur from WTPO, such as hydrodesulfurization (HDS), oxidative desulfurization (ODS), ultrasound-assisted oxidative desulfurization (UAOD), and acid treatment. Of these, HDS is the most expensive as it involves high consumption of hydrogen, high temperature (~450 °C), and high pressure (~200 bar), whereas UAOD is an efficient and economic method of reducing the sulfur content of WTPO.

Oxidative desulfurization process (ODS), enhanced with a novel metal oxide (Ag ions) as an active component over nano-zeolite that has not been reported in the literature, is used here to improve the fuel quality by removing mercaptan (as a model sulfur compound in the light naphtha). Nano-crystalline (nano-support (Nano-zeolite)) composite is prepared by Incipient Wetness Impregnation method loaded with a metal salt to obtain 0.5, 1 and 1.5% of Ag2O3 over Nano-zeolite. The new homemade nano-catalysts (Ag2O3/Nano-zeolite) prepared are characterized by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) (surface area, pore volume and pore size), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis. The ODS process is then used to evaluate the performance of the catalysts for the removal of sulfur at different reaction temperatures (80–140 °C) and reaction times (30–50 min) in a batch reactor using the air as oxidant. 87.4% of sulfur removal has been achieved using 1% silver oxide loaded on Nano zeolite (1% of Ag2O3/Nano-zeolite) giving a clear indication that our newly designed catalyst is highly efficient catalyst in the removal of sulfur compound (mercaptan) from naphtha. A new mechanism of chemical reaction for sulfur removal by oxygen using the new homemade catalyst (Ag2O3/Nano-zeolite) prepared has been suggested in this study. The best kinetic model parameters of the relevant reactions are also estimated in this study using pseudo first order technique based on the experimental results.
