Catabolism of Nitrogenous Compounds by Pseudomonas

Abstract: The rate of 0, utilization by both pigmented and non-pigmented strains of Pseudosmonas aeruginosa was greater with 2 yo (~1 1 7) Casitone as substrate than with 0.1 M-glucose as substrate. P. aeruginosa readily catabolized Casitone, amino acids and other nitrogenous compounds with the production of an alkaline reaction even in the presence of 0.5 0 4 (wlv) glucose. Other species of Pseudomonas studied varied in their utilization of these compounds, suggesting a different and possibly satisfactory approach to t… Show more

“…Production of alkalinity in glucose-amino acid media was observed in Pseudomonas species (Rhodes, 1959;Gaby, Logan, and Whitaker, 1962), and probably occurs in other species of this physiological type as well.…”

“…We also observed that, at the end of the experiment, the extracellular pH of both, acidic and alkaline cultures was modified, converging in a pH around 8.6. The culture media alkalization was previously observed when ammonia was released due to peptones’ use as carbon and nitrogen sources [39], in this case from LB medium. Interestingly, cultures inoculated under alkaline conditions showed a decrease in media pH at the end of the assays.…”
