Purpose: to evaluate the accuracy of the "Assessment sucking scale to newborn in breastfeeding". Methods: this is a diagnostic study. The "Assessment sucking scale to newborn in breastfeeding" was drawn from an existing instrument, has been validated. The study included 152 mothers / newborn hospitalized in rooming in care. The study was divided into two stages, the first stage adaptation of the instrument and the second validation of the "Assessment sucking scale to newborn in breastfeeding" itself. For comparison between the instruments, it was considered as the gold standard "Protocol assessment of breastfeeding" proposed by UNICEF. Statistical analysis was applied to test the association chi square (first stage) and building the "Receiver Operating Characteristics" curve (second stage). Results: in the first phase, the "Assessment sucking scale to newborn in breastfeeding" was drawn from the behavior of newborns who were associated with breastfeeding, consisting of items posture, movement and cupping tongue and jaw movement. However, in the second stage, it was found that "Assessment sucking scale to newborn in breastfeeding" has a poor accuracy and is not a predictor of the behavior of the newborn in the breastfeeding. Conclusion: the "Assessment sucking scale to newborn in breastfeeding" cannot be considered a predictor of behavior newborn in the breastfeeding.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of oral motor skills of premature infants on their oral feeding performance and growth, during neonatal hospitalization.METHODS: Fifty-one newborns hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit of a hospital in Southern Brazil, between July 2012 and March 2013, were evaluated. The evaluation of oral feeding skills, according to Lau and Smith, was applied after prescription for starting oral feeding. The oral feeding performance was analyzed using the following variables: days taken to start independent oral feeding and hospital discharge. Growth was measured by weight, length, and head circumference, using the curves of Fenton, at birth, first and independent oral feeding, and hospital discharge.RESULTS: At birth, 71% preterm infants were proper for gestational age, most of them were males (53%), with average of 33.6 (±1.5) weeks of gestational age. The gestational age in the assessment did not influence the oral feeding performance of the premature infant and did not differ between levels. Time of transition from tube feeding to oral feeding and hospital stay was shorter when the oral skills were higher. At birth, there was a tendency of low weight and low oral feeding performance. Level IV premature infants in the release of oral feeding presented higher weights.CONCLUSION: The level of oral skills of the premature infant interfered positively on time of feeding transition from tube to independent oral feeding and hospital stay. Growth, represented by weight gain, was not affected by the level of oral skill.

This study aims to identify and analyze, through literature, speech therapy care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for congenital heart disease newborns. The source data is from Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval Sistem Online (MEDLINE), SciELO and the search engine of the National Library of Medicine in the databases PubMed, also the Google Scholar search system (http // scholar.google.com.br). The integrative review leads to knowledge on speech therapy studies with the population of the NICU, however, it does not describe the features of newborns with congenital heart disease, not even the exclusion factors on the research. The speech therapies in NICU are already consolidated and presented as assessment procedures and stimulator of the sensory-motor-oral system, using techniques of non-nutritive and nutritive sucking and hearing screening. The care of patients with congenital heart disease should be differentiated as it has particular features that can compromise the performance concerning feeding. The insertion of the speech therapist in cardiac neonatal ICU is not mentioned and even less are described the goals and practice of this professional. There was found the need for apparatus and investment on staff training to better management of cases in NICUs and specialized units in congenital heart disease, what makes this issue subject for further studies. Foram pesquisados trinta e dois trabalhos, sendo a atuação fonoaudiológica em UTINs descrita em vinte e oito deles, os quais apresentam como procedimentos avaliação e estimulação do sistema sensório-motor-oral, com uso de técnicas de sucção não-nutritiva e nutritiva, além de triagem auditiva. Porém, as características dos neonatos com cardiopatia congênita e a inserção do fonoaudiólogo em UTIN cardíaca não são citadas, pouco se caracterizando os objetivos e a prática desse profissional. Apenas uma publicação obedeceu aos critérios de inclusão do presente estudo. Trata-se de um trabalho que descreve a transição da alimentação enteral direta para o seio materno em recém-nascidos pré-termo cardiopatas, com idade corrigida, em um centro de terapia intensiva neonatal. Foi possível constatar então a escassez de trabalhos publicados sobre intervenção fonoaudiológica com RN cardiopatas, o que indica a necessidade de novos estudos sobre o tema, já que a atenção a esses pacientes deve ser diferenciada, visto que apresentam particularidades que podem comprometer o desempenho na alimentação.
